Community member drove almost 2 hours to testify to @MichiganPSC about Consumers Energy.
"Consumers Energy donated more than $433 M to dark money PACs. We need to break up the monopolies. No rate increases for 5 years. Ban political contributions. Unlock the rooftop solar cap."
.@RepRashida delivers powerful testimony to @MichiganPSC about how outages cause a cascade of impacts in the community. Residents freezing in their homes, losing work, losing food, losing medicine, losing pets. "Stop saying it's unprecedented. Stop blaming the trees."
At @MichiganPSC hearing, Dearborn community member describes going through 20 power outages this year! He says people had to go to Canada because hotels nearby were full.
"It's sad - we have to go to a whole different country because we can't get power here."
Rafael from Soulardarity to @MichiganPSC: We need to pass legislation like hourly compensation for community members who lose power. We need full transparency for DTE. We need to lift the solar cap. You are regulators! Let's work together to regulate DTE, because they need it.
Yvonne of @WeThePeople_MI asks community members at @MichiganPSC hearing on DTE, how many have had to take care of a family member or friend because their power went out. Nearly every hand was raised!
Communities shouldn't have to live this way - we need accountability from DTE!
Community member Maya to @MichiganPSC: "As a DTE customer, it feels like we're paying them to kill us. They're killing us when the power is on, because they refuse to switch from fossil fuels and prevent us from installing solar. And they're killing us with these outages."
Community member Loretta to @MichiganPSC: "I've lost power so many times. I need DTE to know how important it is for us to have power. I've had to throw food out. I've had to be in the cold."
The Michigan Public Service Commission and our legislature must demand accountability!
Small business owner to @MichiganPSC: "I had an engineer come out to see how many solar panels I could put on the roof of my facility to power my business. And guess what? DTE capped the amount of solar energy I could provide to the grid! This is unacceptable!"
We agree!
Community member Liz lost power for w weeks! Lost $100s in spoiled groceries. Had to take time off work just to stay on hold with DTE to find out what was happening.
"Lack in ownership and control over energy resources keeps us in a state of perpetual crisis. We deserve better!"
Community member Brenda of the Bagley community to @MichiganPSC: "If you're a middle income senior in the Detroit area, there are NO resources available if you lose your food and medicine because of a power outage."
Brenda's community lost power for 6 days. #PayUpDTE!
Community member Noel to @MichiganPSC: "I lose power at least once or twice a year. This has become normal but it doesn't have to be. I just lose some food, but there are people who lose their lives."
This is why we must hold DTE accountable!
Community member describes self as "unwilling customer" of DTE.
DTE is a monopoly, and as long as communities have no choice, DTE will continue to get away with providing some of the worst service in the country while charging some of the highest rates!
Community member Tara lists 8 separate occasions when her house lost power in less than a year. She even lost power today! Meanwhile, DTE made $1.9 billion in profits, and they have the gall to ask for a rate increase! Striking testimony to @MichiganPSC.
Community member Maddie to @MichiganPSC: "DTE is not the victim here. DTE isn't going to go hungry when its food spoils. DTE isn't going to have to worry about their medicine going bad. DTE is going to survive. The question is: will we?"
.@RepDebDingell to @MichiganPSC shares heartbreaking stories of constituents who lost power and struggled for days. "Status quo is not okay!"
We must hold DTE accountable for the harm they've caused. This means just compensation for lost food, medicine + work!
Community member Diane to @MichiganPSC: "I lost power for 3 days. I was freezing. I'm on a fixed income, and I lost a lot of food in the refrigerator. I called DTE and they said they'd give me $35 in 90 days... It's been a struggle."
Unacceptable! We must hold DTE accountable!
Community member Jane to @MichiganPSC: "I need you to do you job. I need you to continue to monitor. A lot of people lost their medication, they lost their food."
This is why we must hold DTE accountable! Shoddy service and skyrocketing rates are not acceptable!
