The U.S. is facing a skilled technician gap. Industry does not only need engineers—it needs highly trained mechatronics technicians capable of troubleshooting PLCs, servo systems, robotics cells, and industrial networks.
Countries such as Germany, Japan, and China have invested heavily in technical education pipelines tied directly to advanced manufacturing and robotics ecosystems. We must systematically build talent in mechatronics at the high school level, or risk ceding industrial leadership.
Mechatronics is no longer a niche discipline; it is the convergence layer of mechanical systems, electrical engineering, controls, embedded computing, robotics, and AI-enabled automation. That convergence is where modern industry operates.
For the United States to remain globally competitive, leadership in advanced manufacturing, robotics, automation, and intelligent systems must start at the secondary education level—not at the university level.
