@GardinerIsland Crazy flooding in Balboa this morning. Warm El Niño water is causing tides to be a foot higher than the tide tables predicted.
I'd freak out having to drive through all the salt water.
@GardinerIsland I was reading about that recently. Also, the canal operator charges a premium for ships that want to reserve a definite transit day/time. That new charge is due to drought. It’s capitalism at work. You want to go quickly, get your wallet out!
@GardinerIsland Biopsy and Mohs surgery were performed for skin cancer on my back, likely due to years of beach exposure. I was lucky if I used Sea & Ski once during the summer
@GardinerIsland@nypost@GavinNewsom Don't get me started. Our oldest excelled in HS and crushed the ACT. I made her apply to all UC’s, thinking we’d have our pick and in-state tuition… wrong; the UC’s said no thanks. She received scholarships from out-of-state schools and never looked back
@GardinerIsland The forecast is for a large El Niño effect this winter, which means a wet winter in CA and AZ, needed to break the drought and refill Lake Powell and Lake Mead
@GardinerIsland Good job with your kids; you should be proud they're figuring things out. My youngest started working three weeks ago after graduating and is currently in Virginia for a week of training.
@GardinerIsland Earthquakes have been around since the start of time. And some of the biggest were centuries before the internal combustion engine or coal stoves were invented.
I was very lucky to grow up near the Wedge
A formative experience for me as a kid was sitting on the sand during the Hurricane Linda swell in 1997
Easily 30+ foot faces and just an unbelievable amount of energy in the ocean (bigger than this video)
A middle aged lady was walking on the sand up the berm, not paying attention
About 1 inch of water rushed up and it completely knocked her off her feet
The swell had taken a huge amount of sand out to sea so the berm was at a >30 degree angled pitch
Within about two seconds she was in the impact zone
Lifeguards ran in, saved her, and got her out the backside where the lifeguard boat was waiting
It’s one of the ~5 brief moments from my childhood that’s most seared into my brain
The ocean is powerful
@GardinerIsland One of the Exxon executives was quoted in the media as saying that supplies are very tight and that he expects prices to rise further. Just in time for summer….
