South Korea's joint investigation unit into political-religious collusion has cleared Family Federation leader Dr. Hak Ja Han of bribery and political funds law violations.

The reason: statutes of limitations had expired, or evidence was insufficient to proceed.

The charges alleged that Dr. Han had provided funds to sitting and former National Assembly members.

That allegation has now fully collapsed.

The investigators also cleared the politicians on the receiving end of those same allegations: Democratic Party Rep. Jeon Jae-su on bribery charges, and former Reps. Im Jong-seong and Kim Gyu-hwan on political funds law violations.

When both the alleged giver and the alleged recipients are cleared, the entire theory of the case falls apart.

The joint unit was established specifically to investigate political-religious collusion.

It was stood up under an administration that has also pursued the Family Federation's dissolution in South Korea and supported legislative targeting of religious organizations.

The unit says separate investigations will continue, including alleged use of Family Federation organizational funds for illegal political donations.

That distinction matters.

The bribery headline that drove this investigation produced nothing.

What continues are secondary probes, with a new stated target alongside the Family Federation: Shincheonji, accused of forced party membership and tax evasion.

An investigation built around a specific allegation cleared every named party.

The question now is whether what follows resembles law enforcement or sustained institutional pressure.

BREAKING: Korea’s Special Commission DECLINED TO INDICT Dr. Han and others in the “religion–politics collusion” case.

This is not an acquittal from the current trial. It simply means there is no further indictment at this point. Either the evidence wasn’t sufficient, or the statute of limitations had passed. But the investigation is not closed.

What stands out is the timing. One of the central figures, Jeon Jae-soo, is now running for mayor under the Democratic Party. This clearly benefits him ahead of the June elections.

More importantly, it at least appears to show that the narrative around this case has always been stronger than the evidence IMO. But... more inquiry is needed.

Dr. Jan Figel, the European Union's former Special Envoy for Religious Freedom, has formally nominated Dr. Hak Ja Han of the Family Federation for the 2026 Nobel Peace Prize — while she sits in a South Korean detention cell.

His nomination cites six grounds: thousands of interfaith peace ambassadors deployed globally, Korean reunification summits, the Sunhak Peace Prize, UN ECOSOC consultative status, a proposed DMZ International Peace Park, and cultural diplomacy through the Little Angels Troop.

Figel wrote that many international observers regard her detention as politically motivated, aimed at silencing her global peace work.

US Vice President JD Vance also raised her case directly with South Korea's Prime Minister in official bilateral talks.

To understand the dissolution of the Family Federation in Japan, you need to know about the kidnapping and forced confinement cases.

Pastors of the United Church of Christ in Japan were involved in abducting and confining Family Federation members to force them to leave their faith.

They spoke about this during their own worship services.

Confinement was the first step in a coordinated process:

- Left-wing lawyers referred families to specialist pastors
- Believers were held until they renounced their faith
- Release required filing a civil lawsuit against the Church
- Those lawsuits became the state's evidence

Behind the scheme was the National Network of Lawyers Against Spiritual Sales, founded by attorneys with close ties to left-wing political parties.

According to submissions by legal researcher Patricia Duval to the UN Special Rapporteur on Freedom of Religion, at a 1991 meeting, network lawyers and pastors publicly declared a shared goal: eliminate the Family Federation by accumulating civil damages cases.

Lawyers pushed former members to sue the Church as proof of their apostasy.

Japan's government then used those civil judgments as the basis to file for dissolution.

The evidence base is lawsuits filed by people who had no choice but to file them to get out.

Dr. Jan Figel @janfigel, former EU Special Envoy for Freedom of Religion or Belief, has formally nominated Dr. Hak Ja Han of the Family Federation (FFWPU) for the 2026 Nobel Peace Prize.

In his nomination letter, Figel cited the following achievements:
