Contempt is expressed through derogatory insults, sarcasm, name-calling, tone of voice, and eye-rolling. Contempt goes beyond criticism, it implies that the other person is less than us, worthless and undeserving of respect.

Criticism is different than voicing a complaint. Criticism is an attack to dismantle a person's character, while a complaint is about a specific concern.

Telling someone to calm down when they're overwhelmed is not helpful. It's invalidating to the person's experience and teaches them that they can't express difficult emotions around us.
Once our attachment system is activated it is difficult to calm things down unless we get a clear indication from our partner that the they are here for us and that our relationship is safe.
