I thought he was for better training and a more skilled trucking industry and I support that. I did not know what I was supporting. He likes to say "get rekt" - what a wreck. Every time I engage someone on X and weird tuff happens, I realize I was a naive idiot. Better to stand back, continue the mission and just be silent.
I think your position on increasing wages is a good one. I also think wages are going to rise - capacity is tight and rates are up. It is long overdue. There is a bit of catch-22 though. Highly skilled drivers throw in the towel due to the degradation and low wages, and carriers are all competing with the same degradation as a baseline. The only way to get to a better place is enforcement and penalties, and I agree with the much stronger penalties that you suggest. However carriers can only pay their drivers more when everyone is paying more. Being the only generous carrier is suicide because you wont win any business and trucking is already a very low margin business. The system has failed due to horrible policy and a willingness for risk at at artificially low rates. Also, I am not a globalist. Far from it. I see a mass influx of humanity from one place to another as a massive threat to stability, but there will always be people coming here - my point is that this Kenya thing is more symbolic and it is not going to change trucking. A quick path for veterans seems like a good idea. Have a good one, sorry to offend - not my intention. I still respect what you are doing even if you think I am full of it. I find the rancor on X interesting.
On the surface it may look like a nefarious plan, but the safety records, the training and experience etc are not part of this examination. Rushing the border and coming through the front door are two different things. Werner has too much at stake to deploy unsafe drivers. Not all are but they cannot take risks, further because of the visibility to safety all major truckers are forced to address safety. Shippers are all over them. You own that. Werner is not your enemy. Its a system that allows existing laws to be relaxed, that is changing.
