Caravaggio — Judith y Holofernes (1599)

Fíjate en el brazo de Judith: está casi recto, empujando la cabeza de Holofernes lejos de su cuerpo, como si quisiera tocar lo menos posible lo que está haciendo. Los rayos X confirman que Caravaggio no llegó así de primeras: movió la cabeza, la separó un poco más del torso y la corrió hacia la derecha mientras pintaba. No fue un boceto que se ejecuta, fue una decisión que se toma con el pincel en la mano, ajustando la distancia exacta entre la asesina y su horror. Ese milímetro de más es todo el gesto psicológico del cuadro.

Look at Judith's arm: almost straight, pushing Holofernes's head as far from her body as she can manage, as if trying to touch as little as possible of what she's doing. X-rays confirm Caravaggio didn't arrive at this composition in one go: he shifted the head, pulled it slightly further from the torso, nudged it rightward as he painted. This wasn't a sketch simply executed, it was a decision made brush in hand, calibrating the exact distance between the killer and her horror. That extra inch is the whole psychology of the picture.
