ICT MINISTER OFFICIATES 3rd NAMIBIA MEDIA AND COMMUNICATIONS CONFERENCE | Hon. Emma Theofelus, Minister of Information and Communications Technology (ICT) officially opened the 3rd Namibia Media and Communications Conference 2026, on Monday 21 September 2026 at UNAM main campus. The conference held under the theme "Media and Communication in Transition: A Call to Action" brought together Communications and Media Practitioners across academia, governance, the private sector as well as International communication practitioners.

Hon. Theofelus described the current communication landscape as an information vortex , a space of constant innovation, digital disruption, and a relentless 24/7 news cycle that continuously accelerates the volume and complexity of information processed not only by communicators and media practitioners, but more critically by citizens.

The Minister raised the critical question of what this information vortex means for media and information literacy, noting that in an environment of compounding platforms and constant information, citizens must be empowered to understand the function of media, critically evaluate content, and make informed decisions. With misinformation, disinformation, and fake news on the rise, she stressed that as governments are quickly learning they must both use and circumvent emerging technologies to reach citizens with authentic and credible information, as many will base life decisions on information that may be untrue.

Hon. Theofelus called on communicators to shift with the ever-shifting landscape, arguing that as lines continue to blur, with multimedia integration becoming standard practice across communication channels, communication professionals are now required to develop skills across various media types and understand how they work together to create cohesive experiences. She further urged communicators across the spectrum to leverage Artificial Intelligence (AI), stressing that the shift is not necessarily about replacing human communicators, but about enhancing workflows and finding ways to responsibly coexist with emerging technologies. She further pointed that just like social media, AI is here to stay.

SEE WASTE DIFFERENTLY | Delivering an address on behalf of the President of the Republic of Namibia, Her Excellency Dr. Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah, Right Honourable Prime Minister Dr. Tjitunga Elijah Ngurare challenged young people across the country to look beyond waste as a problem and instead identify opportunities to reuse, recycle and turn waste into viable businesses.

Speaking during the relaunch of the Clean-up Namibia Campaign in Windhoek on 19 September 2026, Ngurare encouraged young Namibians to make use of the National Youth Development Fund (NYDF) to turn these ideas into practical businesses, while contributing to efforts to keep Namibia clean and creating economic opportunities from waste.

CLEAN UP NAMIBIA CAMPAIGN - Namibian musician and entrepreneur Monica “TopCheri” Pineas was among the media personalities who formed part of the group at Okapale in Goreangab for the Clean Up Namibia Campaign.

Pineas encouraged Namibians to clean up wherever they find themselves and to take responsibility for keeping their surroundings clean.

CLEAN UP NAMIBIA CAMPAIGN - Namibian media personality and influencer Maria Nepembe is also at Okapale, where she is set to participate in the Clean Up Namibia Campaign taking place across various areas of Windhoek.

Nepembe called on Namibians to come out and join the campaign as communities work together to clean up Namibia.

CLEAN UP NAMIBIA CAMPAIGN RELAUNCHED AT OKAPALE - The City of Windhoek’s Chief Executive Officer, Moses Matyayi, is among the leaders attending the commemoration of World Cleanup Day and the relaunch of the Clean Up Namibia Campaign at Okapale in Goreangab, Windhoek.

Matyayi encouraged Namibians to take responsibility for their surroundings by disposing of waste responsibly and refraining from littering.

The Clean Up Namibia Campaign seeks to promote civic pride, responsible waste management, environmental awareness and community action.

CLEAN UP NAMIBIA CAMPAIGN KICKS OFF | The commemoration of World Cleanup Day and the relaunch of the Clean Up Namibia Campaign has officially kicked off in Windhoek, at Okapale in Goreangab.

The event is attended by the Mayor of the City of Windhoek and the Minister of Environment, Forestry and Tourism, Hon. Indileni Daniel, while Prime Minister Elijah Ngurare is expected to deliver an address.

Namibians across the country are being called upon to take part in the campaign by cleaning up and keeping their surroundings clean wherever they find themselves.

WINDHOEK SEEKS TO RECLAIM CLEANEST CITY STATUS | The Mayor of the City of Windhoek, His Worship Councillor Sakarias Uunona, says the Clean Up Namibia Campaign is part of efforts to help Windhoek reclaim its former status as Africa’s cleanest city.

Windhoek previously held the title of Africa’s cleanest city from 2005 to 2014. The Mayor emphasised the importance of collective responsibility in keeping the city clean and promoting proper waste management.

He said the campaign goes beyond keeping the city clean, as improved hygiene and responsible waste management are also essential for public health.

ESP GROUP BRIEF MICT ON CST EXPO SUCCESS| On Friday, 18 September 2026, the Minister of Information and Communications Technology (ICT) , Hon. Emma Theofelus received a delegation from the Emaraldsands Platform (ESP) group led by Executive Director Albie Botha and brand representative Magano Mbako for a post-event briefing on the recently concluded Creative Sports and Tourism (CST) Expo, alongside a presentation on ESP’s newly developed local content monetisation platform 1up2.

The delegation reported that the CST Expo successfully reached 23 million people globally, demonstrating the significant impact that the convergence of creativity, sports, and tourism can have when brought together as a unified platform. Esther Kamati, representing ESP’s Show TV brand, presented the 1Up2 platform, a local content monetisation solution developed in response to challenges experienced by Namibian creatives around the distribution of and earning potential of their content. The platform, which operates on a user generated content model, would allow Namibian filmmakers, creatives, and content producers to upload and monetise their work, with earnings going directly to the content creator.

Hon. Theofelus, welcomed the development, expressing that it has her full backing noting that it addresses a long standing challenge around the monetisation of local digital content, a matter the Ministry has been actively pursuing.

The Minister further remarked that the upcoming National ICT summit presents additional opportunities to advance local platform development as part of Namibia’s broader digital transformation agenda.

HON. THEOFELUS ADDRESSES STATE OF JUSTICE CONFERENCE | Minister of Information and Communications Technology, (ICT), Hon. Emma Theofelus addressed the closing session of the State of Justice Conference, delivering remarks centred on the rapidly evolving intersection of artificial intelligence and legal practice, and the profound questions it poses for the justice system, legal professionals, and society at large.

The Minister remarked that while AI will affect every sector from logistics and medicine to education its impact on legal practice is particularly complex and difficult to predict, given the rapid pace at which AI is developing and the current absence of internationally agreed guardrails, common values, and regulations. Describing the global AI landscape as a race with very little oversight, Hon. Theofelus acknowledged that AI has the potential to enhance the efficiency with which justice is delivered and the accuracy with which the law is applied, provided it is used responsibly, lawfully, and ethically.

While raising concerns around emerging agentic AI systems that can carry out actions, raising a profound question on what risk this poses around accountability, ownership and whether an AI system could ever be recognised as a juristic person. She challenged delegates to consider how courts will determine the authenticity of AI generated images or videos presented as evidence in criminal matters, and whether the justice system will need to rely on AI itself to verify such evidence.

NAMIBIA STANDS WITH CUBA | President of the Republic of Namibia, Her Excellency Dr. Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah, has reaffirmed Namibia’s enduring friendship and solidarity with the people of Cuba, highlighting the historic ties between the two nations forged through shared struggle, sacrifice and cooperation.

Delivering the keynote address at the Prime Minister’s Gala Dinner in Solidarity with the People of Cuba, held on 16 September 2026 at the Nampower Convention Centre in Windhoek, President Nandi-Ndaitwah reflected on Cuba’s significant contribution to Namibia’s liberation struggle and its continued support to Namibia in areas including healthcare, education, agriculture, engineering and sport.

The President called on Namibians to contribute generously to the solidarity initiative, emphasising that every contribution, regardless of size, demonstrates that the friendship forged in struggle remains alive and that Namibia remembers the people of Cuba during their time of need.

The event also saw individuals, organisations and institutions make pledges in support of the cause, with various contributions made in solidarity with the people of Cuba.

Minister of Information and Communication Technology, Hon. Emma Theofelus, delivered the closing remarks, reaffirming the enduring relationship between Namibia and Cuba and the significance of Namibia’s continued solidarity with the Cuban people.

The gala dinner was hosted by Right Honourable Dr. Tjitunga Elijah Ngurare, Prime Minister of the Republic of Namibia, and brought together government leaders, members of the diplomatic corps and invited guests.

SHITYUWETE LAID TO REST | Helao Joseph Shityuwete was today, 13 September 2026, laid to rest at Pioneers Park Cemetery in Windhoek, following a State Funeral attended by Government leaders, political leaders, veterans of the liberation struggle, family members and mourners.

President Dr Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah paid tribute to Shityuwete’s unwavering sacrifice for Namibia’s liberation, including 18 years in prison, and his continued commitment to nation-building following Independence.
The President said Namibia holds immense gratitude for his life and service, noting that his legacy must be honoured not only through words, but through action by building a Namibia founded on freedom, opportunity, equality and dignity for all.

As Shityuwete was laid to rest, the President said his duty is done, and it is now for those who remain to carry forward the Namibia for which he fought and helped liberate.
