Aang let it becomes a hundred years by running away from his responsibilities as the new Avatar, Roku only failed to prevent the war from happening by sparing his friend.

Korra's only mistake was trusting her uncle, Unalaq. Which didn't last very long as she realized his true goals rather quickly. After that was just her getting overpowered in a 2v1 fight against Unalag and Vaatu, leading to Raava of being wank out of her and temporary ending the cycle of Avatars. Which is mildly a blessing in disguised, since she started a new cycle and could help future Avatars of how to handle a world becoming more modern.

Korra causing an apocalypse is just sound like propaganda in the fanbase, no one knows what happening in Seven Hevens. Only small amount of info and gossip.
