Rikugien (六義園) in Tokyo has the autumn gardens lit up at nights after 6! I took advantage of the warm evening the other night and visited. It was well worth it. Kyoto also has similar events in the parks this time of year!

December in Japan at last! Called "Shiwasu," (師走) this month is all about the preparation for the year's end, called "nenmatsu-nenshi." (年末年始)
Snow may begin, year-end parties will abound, and holidays are the talk of the town.

A ro-guchi (炉口) is a dug-out stove designed to simmer a tea kettle on coals during the winter months in a Japanese tea room. This is what happens when one opens a ro-guchi for the first time during the year, and happens to own a sphynx cat.

These is something otherworldly about watching fireworks on a boat. There are no crowd reactions, so silence is thick like velvet. The explosions reverberate against the cliffs, expanding forever. It’s just you and the intimate fireworks. The whole world is consumed by glitter.

Narita-san is a Buddhist temple located in Narita, Chiba. It was founded over 1,000 years ago is a major center for the Fudoson belief and attracts millions of visitors, especially during the New Year period. It is close to Narita Airport.

My neighborhood is full of kaki (柿 Japanese persimmon)! Pretty orange bulbs cover the trees on the back streets. I saw a stand on my walk today selling them for only 200 yen a bag. Naturally, I couldn't resist the fruits of the season.

Friends! Baby Dog and Ron are continuing to bond. They are spending a lot of time together and clearly enjoy each other’s company. I am very impressed with Baby Dog’s understanding that he needs to be gentle with Ron (I really don’t think he meant to push him off the bed!)

It is Kaguratsuki (神楽月), or November in Japan! This month in Tokyo, the leaves will take on rich hues, and the cuisine becomes definitively autumnal. New tea replaces the old, and year-end plans begin to be made.

In Shinjuku (新宿), the designated meeting spot for film crew in the mornings is in front of the west-side post office. From 4:30 the street is lined with production vehicles. I’m proud of myself for bringing a healthy breakfast bento. I now have a two-hour ride to Ibaraki (茨城). いってきます！
