Several protesters in Nigeria have reportedly burned and looted shops they believed were owned by South Africa—only to later discover they were, in fact, owned by… Nigerians.
The confusion began amid rising tensions over claims that Nigerians are being mistreated in South Africa. Determined to “send a strong message,” protesters took aim at well-known brands like Shoprite, MTN Group, and MultiChoice.
Unfortunately, the message appears to have been delivered directly to local Nigerian investors.
“I thought we were fighting back,” said one protester, standing outside the charred remains of a supermarket he later learned belonged to his cousin’s investment group. “Now my aunt says I must explain myself at the next family meeting. This is worse than any government response.”
