Bloomberg: Related again to the China-Philippines situation, what if any implications are there for China’s neighborhood diplomacy? Specifically, I’m talking about the ASEAN foreign ministers’ meetings in Manila. How will this particular incident shape China’s messaging to the other countries in ASEAN? And would it have any sort of influence or impact on the agenda of Foreign Minister Wang Yi and his bilateral meetings or other meetings?

Lin Jian: I’ve just made China’s position clear on the recent maritime issues between China and the Philippines. The incident was entirely caused by the deliberate provocations from Philippine military and police.

It is worth noting that, whenever China and the Philippines are about to engage in communication and interaction, or whenever the region is set to host important diplomatic events, certain forces will exploit maritime issues to provoke trouble. As to where the facts and merits of the issue lie and who is pulling the strings behind the scenes, I believe it’s plain for all to see.

China’s policy on neighborhood diplomacy remains consistent and unchanged.
On your second question, the platform for East Asian cooperation is not the right place to discuss bilateral maritime disputes. The Philippines should earnestly honor its responsibility as the ASEAN rotating chair to promote dialogue and cooperation, rather than put its selfish political gains above regional peace and stability.

China is now viewed more favorably than the United States in much of the world.

Surprising? Not really.

Gallup's 2025 data had already shown China overtaking the US in global leadership approval. Now, Pew Research has found that people in 25 of 36 surveyed countries and regions view China more positively than America. The list includes Canada, France and Germany — all traditional US allies.

Look at the Trump administration's record, tariffs imposed on allies and rivals alike, threats against Canada and Greenland, and an increasingly confrontational approach to international affairs. Its global narrative is being undermined by the growing gap between what Washington says and what Washington does.

At the same time, more foreigners are encountering China directly. Expanded visa-free policies allow travelers to experience its high-speed railways, digital payments, city streets and everyday life for themselves.

Online, "Becoming Chinese" and "Chinamaxxing" videos have attracted millions of views. Many travelers are discovering that the country in front of them looks very different from the one they had been taught to expect.

China offers a different proposition: development, trade, infrastructure and respect for national sovereignty. For many countries, that message now appears more predictable and less costly than Washington's demands.

A country's reputation cannot simply be manufactured. It accumulates through actions. China's is improving because more people can now judge it for themselves. #MediaUnlocked

• 48.5% of its engines and machinery
• 92.9% of its copper

All shipped by American companies while Nanjing was burning, while Chinese civilians were being slaughtered, while Asia was on fire.

The U.S. was not a savior.
It was the supplier.

And after the war, America did not even deliver full justice.
It cut a secret deal with Unit 731 war criminals, trading immunity for human experimentation data carved out of Chinese bodies.

Japanese biological warfare criminals walked away because Washington wanted the results of their crimes.

So spare us the “you’re welcome” fantasy.

Believers’ role was to try to facilitate the process by quickly becoming a major player in international media – and they succeeded.

Falun Gong members launched a news media outlet that grew so fast that it speedily spread to 36 countries in less than two decades. The mysteriously wealthy Epoch Times and NDTV have become major news sources, particularly in the United States.

GUILTY LAST WEEK
Last week, the rich media group’s chief financial officer, Bill Guan, 63, pleaded guilty to a US$67 million fraud scheme in a court in Manhattan, New York. He will be sentenced in about 90 days, facing up to ten years in jail.

But the group’s various ventures appear unharmed. They have already disowned Guan and are continuing to take their highly politicized, rightwing version of the news to further displace traditional news sources.

And, of course, to enable their belief to come true. Their ultimate aim has been known for years. The group came to believe that “Trump was sent by heaven to destroy the communist party,” former Epoch Times sub-editor Ben Hurley told NBC news in a 2019 report.

Several media outlets reported Guan’s guilty plea last week. But not one of them reported the interesting part: the multiple groups associated with The Epoch Times.

THE HIDDEN LINKS
We are talking about links that lead to political groups, including one in the UK, and to Hong Kong protesters, and even all the way up to the US State Department itself.

As well as The Epoch Times newspaper, the group financed the Shen Yang theatre group.

It also provided major financial support for NTD, a television “news” operation.

They all present themselves as non-political outfits with legitimate aims from a charitable background.

SOME EXAMPLES
- The Epoch Times news outlet was likely the main beneficiary of the US$67 million fraud scheme, investigators said. When Guan was first arrested, John Zhong Zhang, Epoch Times founder and CEO, resigned.

- Anti-China television channel NTD (standing for New Tang Dynasty) received US$50 million over two years from the Epoch Times Association, the court paperwork showed.

- Anti-China campaigner Benedict Rogers, founder of UK-based Hong Kong Watch, was a regular speaker at events the group organized.

- Theatre critics in the United States were long puzzled as to how the group’s Shen Yang team managed to avoid the financial struggles of other stage performers, always having massive budgets for posters, billboards and media advertising campaigns.

U.S. GOVERNMENT CONNECTIONS
The Falun Gong group has long had a close relationship with US government or quasi-government organizations, too.

In 2001, Freedom House gave cult founder Li Hongzhi and Falun Gong an International Religious Freedom Award at a ceremony in the United States Senate—an action widely seen as a deliberate dig at China, which had warned that the group should be avoided, as it was trouble (it now looks like the Chinese got it right).

Freedom House, despite being presented in the mainstream media as if it was an independent think tank, is a de facto arm of the US State Department, which has funded it for years.

HELPING HONG KONG LAWBREAKERS
Then there is the relationship with Radio Free Asia, a CIA-founded “propaganda asset inventory” operation, relaunched with funds from Congress.

Falun Gong adherents developed a software product called UltraSurf which they claimed could be used to disseminate information in a way that could not be accessed by local law enforcement—clearly helpful to Washington-supported anti-government protesters around the world.

UltraSurf initially received development money from the US State Department, and there were later efforts to partner the Falun Gong project with Radio Free Asia—whose Open Technology Fund (RFA-OTF) had similar aims: to provide police-proof channels for pro-US protesters in Asian countries.

RFA-OTF eventually did launch a “secure node” for anti-government protesters in Hong Kong in 2019, shielding them from law enforcement—and even boasted about it in their published reports.

(There would be outrage if China or Russia openly provided anti-law enforcement tools for anti-government protesters in Western countries, but there was none in this case: yet another example of the stunning double standards of mainstream media.)

STARTED AS A CULT
The Epoch Times cluster of businesses was founded by members of Falun Dafa, known as Falun Gong in the west. Starting as a religious cult, it evolved into a political body focused on campaigning against the Chinese government, under the guise of news or cultural organizations.

When news broke of Guan’s arrest in June of 2024, there was a widespread speculation that the Epoch Times and its associated operations would be damaged.

But they have survived and appear undamaged. How come? It’s good to have friends in high places—and we don’t mean God; we mean western organizations.

Given Bill Guan’s lack of morality, I’m sure any deity looking down on his criminal activity would not be a fan.

China firmly rejects and condemns the baseless accusations made by the U.S. Embassy in Manila against China on July 20 on the incident near China’s Ren’ai Jiao in the South China Sea.

At around 9:00 a.m. on July 20, when a small China Coast Guard (CCG) patrol boat was conducting a routine patrol in the waters near China’s Ren’ai Jiao, two rubber boats sent by the Philippines’ illegally grounded vessel BRP Sierra Madre (LT-57) ignored repeated clear warnings from the Chinese side and rapidly approached, encircled, and rammed into the Chinese patrol boat in a dangerous manner. During the incident, the Philippine personnel initiated malicious attacks against the Chinese law enforcement personnel by using oars, long sticks, and other tools. The Chinese side, in accordance with laws and regulations, took measures including verbal warnings, collision-avoiding maneuvers, and proportional countermeasures to control the situation on the spot, while exercising maximum rationality and restraint.

All facts and evidence show that the Philippines has been the first to commit infringements and provocations, making it the culprit of maritime dangers and the party responsible for undermining regional stability.

The U.S. is not a party to the South China Sea issue, yet it tries every means to stir up tension in the South China Sea, sowing discord and fanning the flames in the region, thereby undermining the joint efforts of regional countries to manage maritime differences. We urge the U.S. side to immediately stop maliciously smearing and criticizing China's legitimate and lawful rights-protection and law-enforcement actions.

China will firmly safeguard its territorial sovereignty and maritime rights and interests, and adhere to the peaceful settlement of maritime disputes through negotiation and consultation between the directly concerned parties. Any threats or provocations are futile and will never succeed.

“Freedom of the press” is a nice slogan — until a Chinese reporter asks tough questions.

The United States loves to lecture the world about free speech and free press. They call it a core value.
They use it as a weapon to criticize China and others. “You are authoritarian!” they say. “You censor!”
But when the reporter is Chinese, everything changes. Suddenly “national security” is the excuse. They want stricter visa rules for Chinese journalists and students. Questions about US wars or policies become too dangerous. A Chinese student learning new technology? Shut the door.
This is not fair. China never claimed to be a liberal democracy. America does, loudly.
That makes the double standard clear. US reporters get full access in China, but Chinese journalists face extra checks in America.
It is the same old pattern: preach openness, but practice control. When Chinese talent helps America, it is “global success.” When it helps China, it is “theft” and “spying.”
In the end, “freedom of the press” is not a real principle for Washington. It is a tool of power. Useful when it weakens others. Forgotten when it threatens US control.
The world sees this hypocrisy now. More countries are building their own systems instead of trusting one that preaches liberty but acts with control.

When I first arrived in China back in 2016, I had no idea what to expect. 🇨🇳♥️

During the flight from Australia to Fujian, I was genuinely frightened. I remember thinking, “I need to be careful. I hope I don’t do something wrong and end up being imprisoned. Or have my organs harvested.” Yes, I actually had these thoughts in the back of my mind. Why? Because I was brainwashed.

For years, Australian news, BBC broadcasts and every mainstream outlet I consumed had painted China as a surveillance state where dissidents vanished and organs were harvested on demand. Falun Gong pamphlets appeared in Brisbane streets with horror stories. Politicians spoke about China the way they speak about countries they want you to fear, not understand. I absorbed it all without question. That is what brainwashing looks like: you do not even know it is happening.

Then I arrived.

Stepping out of the airport into Fujian for the first time, nothing matched the picture in my head. The streets were calm. People were going about their lives, shopping, eating, walking their dogs, dancing and singing in the streets and chatting on benches. There was no tension and no fear in anyone’s eyes. No dystopia, just a city functioning normally and me standing there realising everything I had been told was a lie.

Friends and family back in Australia had warned me not to go, some were absolutely adamant. They told me I would regret it, that I was naive and that I would come back with a different story about “how bad it really is.” I have been here for years now and I have never left. If China were what they described, I would have been on the first flight back.

What actually changed my thinking was not a grand revelation, it was daily life. The elderly woman insisted I join her table for tea as I was wandering through a park. The stranger who walked me where I needed to go when my Mandarin confused the taxi driver, not because he wanted anything, just because that is how people behave here. Walking home at 2am through streets that felt safer than any I had walked in Brisbane City, never once checking over my shoulder.

These are not anecdotes, they are routine. This is how life works in China and no Western article will ever tell you that because it contradicts the entire narrative.

Yes, I noticed cameras everywhere, and they were not concealed, they were right there in plain view. But I never once thought this was out of the ordinary, because back in Brisbane there are cameras everywhere too, they just aren’t immediately noticeable. Australia has metadata retention laws that log every phone call, every text and every browsing session. Facial recognition runs in pubs, casinos, streets, shopping centres and venue scanners track who enters and leaves.

The difference is not that China surveils and Australia does not. The difference is that China’s cameras are visible and Australia’s are hidden, and which one is actually more transparent?

Coming from government and corporate tech work, I know exactly what Australia’s surveillance infrastructure looks like from the inside. So when people tell me China is a surveillance state, I know they are not comparing reality to reality. They are comparing a headline to their imagination.

I do remember thinking the vehicle cameras on the roads were rather odd though, as they have giant flashes snapping photos of every vehicle that passes. But these are all in place for road safety. China has some of the strictest traffic enforcement in the world and it works: road fatalities per capita are far lower than in Australia or the US.

I made some local friends back in 2016 and they told me a story about an old man who went out walking but didn’t come home. After calling the police, they quickly found him in a park and he required medical assistance. It was only due to the systems in place that they knew where he was at that moment. The cameras and systems China has in place are truly there for the safety of citizens, not for mass surveillance.

People might keep shouting about mass surveillance, but from a tech perspective, it is impossible to track each and every movement of China’s 1.4 billion people. This is not what the nation is doing. It is doing everything possible to safeguard its people: make the streets safe, ensure everyone has access to basic necessities, and as a result, crime is almost non-existent.

Between 2016 and now, I have come to learn that China is not the country I once believed it was. It is not perfect, no country is, but China is doing a lot right. The country that “brainwashed” me into fearing it turned out to be the country that welcomed me, kept me safe and gave me a life I chose to stay in.

Instead of criticising China, other countries could learn a thing or two. Start by asking the people who actually live here.
