@YouTube Harrisonburg Deputy City Manager Amy Snider 3/4/2026 at Virginia Mennonite Retirement Community event on restoring trust with communities harmed by Urban Renewal.
My father, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., spoke boldly about jobs, wages, and poverty. He made it clear that racial justice and economic justice cannot be separated.
That truth still challenges us today. Economic inequity is not just a policy issue. It is a moral issue that shapes dignity, opportunity, and trust in our democracy.
At The King Center, we continue to lift up this unfinished work and equip people to address economic injustice through the practice of nonviolence and the pursuit of the Beloved Community.

A win stopping 2026 VA HB315 . Very thoughtful arguments in favor strengthen case for increased funding for service to vulnerable communities rather than more code enforcement.
Next to stop, HB1316 by @kimadamsforva and SB742 by @lashrecseaird#NoMowMay

@WHSVnews Coalition Secretary in the fourth row right, with City Council. Welcome to cover People's Day next year, that this year had 20 marching and over 100 at Emanual Episcopal Church. https://t.co/46zYPrg9Pt
Half a dozen at the art viewing, about 20 marching, over a hundred total attendance at Harrisonburg #MLK2026 People's #MLKDay celebration. See pictures at https://t.co/46zYPrg9Pt
We are still on the journey to achieve Dr. King’s dream, but in the former Capital of the Confederacy the House of Delegates is now led by a Black man while the Senate of Virginia is led by a Black woman. Let us all strive to judge and be judged by the content of our character.
Today, on Martin Luther King Jr. Day, we reflect on the fact that the journey of our democracy is difficult and ongoing – and the distance is short between peril and possibility.
But we must keep it going.
Our march toward a more perfect union continues.
Please share and invite to People's Day, the annual celebration of Harrisonburg's Martin Luther King, Jr. Way street renaming which, for a time, changed the political landscape of the city and has had lasting national impacts. https://t.co/9gxSEB2OvI
A pioneering poet of the Black Arts Movement and the Civil Rights era, Nikki Giovanni used her pen to advance racial and gender equality and confront violence, hate and injustice.
Jill and I send our love and condolences to her family and all those who loved and admired her courage.
Harrisonburg's Martin Luther King, Jr. Way street renaming was followed by a call to "stop punishing our nephews who have served their time." Our incarceration and victimization rates plummeted and while that strength lasted, the community thrived. This is an important start.
Today, I’m pardoning 39 people with non-violent crimes who have demonstrated remorse and rehabilitation, and I’m commuting the sentences of nearly 1,500 others – many of whom would have received lower sentences today.
America was built on second chances. That's what these pardons and commutations represent.
On Earth Day, I encourage all Americans to reflect on the need to protect our precious Earth—and to heed the call to combat climate change while growing the economy and creating a healthier, safer, more equitable future for all.
