Today, the Civil Rights Act of 1968 was passed, which prohibited discrimination in sales, rentals and financing of housing. This legislation was encouraged by President Johnson after MLK's death a week earlier.

The American Civil War ended 154 years ago today when General Robert E. Lee surrendered the Army of Northern Virginia to Union General Ulysses S. Grant at the McLean House in the village of Appomattox Court House.

54 years ago today, Dr. King led a 54-mile march from Selma to Montgomery to campaign for voting rights. Despite the violence they encountered, King and the protesters' persistence eventually affected the Voting Rights Act of 1965, a monumental stride toward civil rights.

This week, we remember Harriet Tubman and her fight against slavery. Harriet was a dreamer in a world that tried to rob her of liberty, but she didn't let that stop her. She died 106 years ago this week, but her legacy will live on forever.
