I wrote an article about this a year ago, and my sources claimed it had been shelved because of the setting's brutality and slavery. At the time, there was a playtest for a potential revival of Dark Sun with new sub-classes and less hostile environs.

For the sake of journalistic integrity and neutrality, I did not directly share my own thoughts on the matter, but this announcement definitely confirms what I hinted at in my article: That Wizards of the Coast might bring Dark Sun back if the slavery and such were removed.
