Although Cillian Murphy is a non-smoker in real life, he portrayed the chain-smoking gangster Tommy Shelby in the hit series Peaky Blinders. To make the character’s constant cigarette use look authentic, the production used specially made herbal cigarettes containing no tobacco or nicotine. Instead, they were crafted from ingredients like rose petals and other natural plant materials.
Over the course of all six seasons, Murphy smoked an astonishing total of approximately 18,000 herbal cigarettes for the role. On average, that worked out to around 3,000 per season. The high number was largely due to multiple takes, frequent close-up shots, and long filming days that required scenes to be repeated from different angles.
The prop department even kept count because Murphy himself was curious about the total. Although the cigarettes were tobacco-free, he later admitted that inhaling so much smoke from burning plant material over the years was physically exhausting and uncomfortable.
The experience was so demanding that Murphy has since said he is reluctant to accept roles that require heavy smoking. Despite the physical toll, his portrayal of Tommy Shelby remains one of his most iconic and acclaimed performances.
