I would understand being confused about "why is it so important that you point out he is 'Black'" if you just landed on Earth, and were unfamiliar with the history of America, and how Black people have been historically kept out of positions of power.
I mean, our nation only elected its first Black man as President in 2008 after 200 years. And despite the fact that he had an amazing background, he was still vilified. Some idiots even claimed he wasn't American.
A mere 50 years ago, Black people were prohibited from using the same water fountain or restroom as white people, and had to ride at the back of the bus.
Even more recently than that, we were denied loans, and steered away from certain properties, like a certain fake billionaire did in the 70s.
As we speak, certain Governors are trying to whitewash that history, so that eventually people will forget how poorly we were treated, how racism is built into the system, and we'll just stop fighting against it because the gaslighting message will be "why do you have to mention the fact that he or she is Black?"
Some folks would be thrilled if there wasn't a Black History Month any more, asking "why isn't there a White History Month," as though EVERY month isn't already that.
Despite best wishes and positive thinking, racism has NOT gone away. Just peruse some of the replies to this quote tweet. Racism will not go away by ignoring it, or pretending it doesn't exist.
If you have mold in your house, pretending it doesn't exist will just let it get worse. You have to shine a light on it, expose it, get to the root cause of it, and be educated on how it got there, so you can prevent it from occurring again.
Celebrating our achievements is an important part of that process, as it points to our youth that with hard work, education, and dedication you too can achieve.
I look forward to a time where it is no longer necessary to point these things out, but for now it serves as a source of pride and good feelings. It doesn't hurt anyone, so why would you care if we point it out anyway?
BREAKING: President Biden strikes a powerful blow for the working class as his Department of Labor announces a proposal to restore and extend mandatory overtime protections to 3.6 million salaried workers.
The historic move would guarantee overtime pay for most salaried workers earning less than $1,059 a week, which come out to about $55,000 annually.
"For too long, many low-paid salaried workers have been denied overtime pay, even though they often work long hours and perform much of the same work as their hourly counterparts," said Jessica Looman, a top official at the Department of Labor.
This is EXACTLY the kind of kitchen table policies that Democrats need to support. Meanwhile, Republicans are fixated on pointless culture war arguments meant to distract voters.
Acting Labor Secretary Julie Su heralded the announcement with inspiring words—
"For over 80 years, a cornerstone of workers’ rights in this country is the right to a 40-hour workweek, the promise that you get to go home after 40 hours or you get higher pay for each extra hour that you spend laboring away from your loved ones," she said.
"I’ve heard from workers again and again about working long hours, for no extra pay, all while earning low salaries that don’t come anywhere close to compensating them for their sacrifices," Su went on.
She pointed out that these new rules fit perfectly within the framework of "Bidenomics," which is all about empowering the poor and middle class instead of giving massive tax cuts to the super-rich.
No sane person can argue with this policy. It will stop employers from brutally exploiting American and make it easier for the hardest working members of our society to carve out a life for themselves and their families.
Joe Biden is the pro-worker candidate!
