The minister made sure to disclose that the government had succeeded in returning more than one million out-of-school children to classrooms over the past two years (which may be made up), while conveniently leaving out the number of school children forced out of school by the recurring attacks on schools nationwide.

This move is clearly intended to discredit the widely cited data which puts the country’s out-of-school children at between 15 million to about 20 million, by publishing a much lower — and obviously fabricated — number.

It is so sad that the government expects us to normalize citizens regularly getting abducted en masse and subsequently released either through ransom payments or rescue missions, which they expect us to cheer as if they are doing us a favour.

The frequent abductions are an indication of the government’s failure to protect the welfare of its citizens.
