ओडिशा से एक बेहद परेशान करने वाली घटना सामने आई है।

बालासोर स्थित एक कॉलेज में विभागाध्यक्ष द्वारा लंबे समय से किए जा रहे यौन उत्पीड़न से तंग आकर एक छात्रा ने कैंपस में ही खुद को आग के हवाले कर दिया। वह गंभीर रूप से झुलस चुकी है और फिलहाल AIIMS भुवनेश्वर में ज़िंदगी और मौत के बीच जूझ रही है।

पीड़िता सत्ताधारी पार्टी के छात्र संगठन की पदाधिकारी भी है। उसने 20 दिन पहले प्रिंसिपल से मदद की गुहार लगाई थी, बाकायदा शिकायत भी की थी ,लेकिन उसे पूरी तरह नजरअंदाज़ कर दिया गया।

सोचिए, जब डबल इंजन की सरकार वाले ओडिशा में खुद सत्ताधारी दल की महिला पदाधिकारी ही इतनी असहाय हो, तो आम महिलाओं की सुरक्षा की स्थिति कैसी होगी?

बेटी पढ़ाओ, बेटी बचाओ' जैसे खोखले नारों के बीच भाजपा सरकार सिर्फ अपनी झूठी छवि बचाने में लगी है, जबकि पिछले 11 वर्षों में महिला सुरक्षा के मोर्चे पर उसका रिकॉर्ड बेहद शर्मनाक रहा है। महिलाओं के खिलाफ यौन हिंसा और अन्य अपराधों में लगातार वृद्धि हुई है।

भाजपा के शासन में बेटियां कहीं भी सुरक्षित नहीं हैं , न कैंपस में, न सड़कों पर, न कहीं और।

सच्चाई तो यही है कि,महिलाओं के लिए भाजपा सरकार से न्याय की उम्मीद भी कैसे की जा सकती है, जब खुद उसके कई नेता यौन उत्पीड़न और महिला विरोधी आचरण के गंभीर आरोपों से घिरे हुए हों।

A day after Rahul Gandhi Ji said that women are not safe in Odisha, a shocking tragedy struck FM College, Balasore where a young girl attempted self-immolation and battling for life after failing to get justice.
The authorities were aware of the sexual favours sought by the Professor and harassment, but did not act on time to protect the girl or give her justice.

I pray for speedy recovery of the young student and demand stringent action against the guilty. Heads must roll in the Higher Education Department too.

It is a national tragedy that a young woman in Odisha was forced to set herself on fire after facing relentless sexual harassment by her college HoD. She pleaded for help - informally to the Principal, formally to the Internal Complaints Committee, and publicly to the CM and Education Minister on social media. Yet, her complaints went unheard.

A BJP MP had demanded the HoD’s suspension but even he was brushed aside - by the college Principal. As such, it is safe to call the Double Engine Sarkar a cruel joke. Because it does not even empower a local MP from the ruling party enough to prevail over a college Principal in a matter so crucial and sensitive.

This is institutional apathy but even more, it is criminal complicity. The culprit, HoD must face the law for driving a woman to self-immolation, but the Principal and the ICC must also be held accountable - not merely for negligence, but for abetment.

Notably, the victim was an ABVP office bearer in a BJP-ruled state. If this is the fate of their own, what can ordinary women - with no access to networks of power - in Odisha, and beyond, possibly expect?

Let this be a wake up call for all Modi bhakts. “Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao” is only a media spectacle. In their daily lives, women across India feel unsafe - especially because of the ruling party’s tendency to stand with the accused instead of the victim, to shield the rapists instead of the raped.

We must, therefore, ask ourselves: Is this the India we want to build for our women?
