Then why would a black person be called African American and not Sudanese American or Congo American, or whichever African country their people came from 300 years ago? If this is truly an ethnic thing, I would think the cultures of the different African countries would be significantly diverse. I think if you asked someone from the Congo, they may agree but I'm only assuming.

I could give two shakes about the color peoples skin. If you were born here, you're American. Not African American, not French American, not Russian American. Just American. If you were born in another country then you can use the moniker of whatever country or continent you came from, such as African American, Canadian American or what they feel is suitable. This is my opinion only and it's what I go by. I guess people can call themselves whatever they like. Mars American for all I care. I just won't participate.
