The wonders of Artificial Intelligence!

There is a morality tale I learned from Native Americans of the United States.

It is a story about a wise old man and a smart aleck boy who had planned to make a fool of the old wise man.

The boy caught a sparrow and held it in the palms of his hands and approached the wise old man. “Old man, what do I have in my hands?”

The old man replied, “You have a bird, my son.”

The boy then asked, “Old man, is the bird alive or is it dead?”

If the old man said that the bird was dead, he would open up his hands and the bird would fly off free.

But if the old man said the bird was alive, he would crush it in his hands and say, “See, foolish old man, the bird is dead.”

So, the boy asked the old man a second time, “Is the bird in my hand alive or dead?”

The old man paused and replied, “Whether the bird is alive or dead is in your hands my child. The choice is yours.”

So it is with Artificial Intelligence. Whether AI will doom or save humanity is in the hands of those who are the masters of AI.

I believe AI will be much like nuclear technology. We can use AI for good of humanity or to end humanity.

The choice is entirely ours.

“𝐁𝐄 𝐇𝐔𝐌𝐀𝐍. 𝐁𝐄 𝐀 𝐇𝐔𝐌-𝐁𝐋𝐄 𝐏𝐔𝐁𝐋𝐈𝐂 𝐒𝐄𝐑𝐕𝐀𝐍𝐓.”

To paraphrase William Congreve, “Hell hath no fury like PM Abiy mad as hell at pretentious, self-important, pompous, puffed up and ostentatious public officials who insist that their chauffeurs open the rear doors of their expensive government-issued cars to show the people in the street how high and mighty they are.”

In this undated video clip, PM Abiy speaks truth to what appears to be a meeting of high public officials. He skewers and lambastes these officials with righteous indignation for their practices of zipping around town and demanding that their chauffeurs open the back door of their expensive government-issued cars.

I have posted the clip with translation because the non-Amharic speaking world should listen and pass judgment on PM Abiy’s moral character and fiber, his sense of rectitude and how he practices of his virtues, values and principles in the political space.

PM Abiy’s moral outrage and exhortation tells me that he believes for one to be an effective leader and public servant, one must be humble and meek and avoid the vices of arrogance and pride.

Reminds me of Matthew 5:5: “Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the earth.” And high public officials should be the “salt of the earth” (Matthew 5:13), people destined to serving humanity and enhancing the quality of life in the world.

𝐈 𝐛𝐞𝐥𝐢𝐞𝐯𝐞 𝐚 𝐩𝐨𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐥 𝐥𝐞𝐚𝐝𝐞𝐫 𝐬𝐡𝐨𝐮𝐥𝐝 𝐛𝐞 𝐦𝐞𝐚𝐬𝐮𝐫𝐞𝐝 𝐧𝐨𝐭 𝐦𝐞𝐫𝐞𝐥𝐲 𝐛𝐲 𝐡𝐢𝐬/𝐡𝐞𝐫 𝐚𝐛𝐢𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐲 𝐭𝐨 𝐟𝐨𝐫𝐦𝐮𝐥𝐚𝐭𝐞 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐢𝐦𝐩𝐥𝐞𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐩𝐮𝐛𝐥𝐢𝐜 𝐩𝐨𝐥𝐢𝐜𝐲, 𝐬𝐤𝐢𝐥𝐥𝐬 𝐨𝐟 𝐩𝐨𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐥 𝐞𝐱𝐩𝐞𝐝𝐢𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐲 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐝𝐢𝐩𝐥𝐨𝐦𝐚𝐜𝐲, 𝐨𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐨𝐫𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐥 𝐟𝐥𝐚𝐢𝐫 𝐨𝐫 𝐛𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐝𝐭𝐡 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐬𝐜𝐨𝐩𝐞 𝐨𝐟 𝐤𝐧𝐨𝐰𝐥𝐞𝐝𝐠𝐞. For me, this clip is an exhibit of PM Abiy’s moral courage, his deep understanding of the meaning of the values he fights for and defends, and the importance he places on morality as the essential fabric of human life and the lives of public servants, institutions and communities. He understands the consequences of practicing ethical values and is able to share it with citizens by making object lessons of those chosen to serve the public at the highest levels of government.

“There are those of you here who have a habit of going around wearing expensive suits and swaggering with self-importance. But you are filled with self-doubt and lack self-confidence. You do not even have the courage to speak your mind.

“How many of you here demand that your driver open the back door of your car so you can sit inside. [Why can’t you open the door yourself?] It is a bad culture. Such prideful arrogance is what destroyed our brothers. You are empty, hollow and vacant on the inside, but you try to cover it up with expensive suits and pretending to be special and important.

“Forget it all. Be human, be human and do your duty/jobs.

“What is the problem? Will you not die one day? Why do you inflict suffering on yourself by pretending to be so important?

“Be human. Walk like a human. Love people. Cry. Laugh. Help others. Do your job.

“Don't sit arrogantly in the back seat of your cars and pretend to be self-important.

“When your disease of arrogant self-importance is rooted out of your mind, when you realize you are human, then that driver, those who provided you protective escort service will one day save your life. Then you'll understand what it means to be human.

“Be human. All of you filled with arrogance and pride, be human. If you had done great deeds, perhaps your arrogance and pride may be understandable.

“Be human. Your arrogance and pride are inflicting suffering on your family.

“Be human.

“Just imagine what goes in the mind of that child who sees your driver opening the back door of your car. What do you think he will think…?”
