DEEP DIVE: The Real Story of ZUPCO's Fleet & Finances‼️

Let's break down the current state of ZUPCO with some revealing numbers.

THE FLEET IN PERSPECTIVE:

ZUPCO has a total of 490 buses under its name. However, the reality on the ground is different.

• 432 of these were newly acquired in 2019.
• But of those, 33 are already write-offs due to accidents, and 22 are working with other stakeholders.
• This leaves them with a core fleet of 377 buses.
• Due to persistent breakdowns, on any given day, only between 260 and 300 buses are actually on the road, serving commuters.
• There is a project to resuscitate 105 old buses, which could provide a much-needed boost.

THE FINANCIAL PICTURE:

Despite the operational challenges, ZUPCO is generating significant revenue:

• Full Year 2024: US$21 Million
• Quarter 2, 2025: US$5.3 Million
• Quarter 3, 2025: US$5.1 Million

This shows a steady and consistent revenue stream, highlighting the high demand for its services.

A FRESH START: THE REBRANDING STRATEGY.

In a significant move, ZUPCO is preparing for a complete rebrand. Here’s why:

• New buses from China will arrive under a new brand name.
• The existing fleet will also be rebranded to match.
• The goal is to protect the ZUPCO name by dissociating it from the various hired buses used during the COVID-19 era, which often had service and image problems.

The Bottom Line: While ZUPCO faces real operational hurdles with its fleet, it remains a financially viable entity. The planned rebrand could be a crucial step in rebuilding public trust and signalling a new chapter.

We note that Mr. Mnangagwa signed into law the controversial and undemocratic PVO Bill into an Act of Parliament. This is a very sad development as most NGOs & CSOs will be clamped on by the regime in the name of the said Act.
In a democratic society as is envisioned by the constitution of Zimbabwe, citizens must be able to freely form CSOs, and NGOs without interference from the State. The amended PVO Act poses serious threats to the operations of CSOs and NGOs in the country. Its unconstitutional and a step in the wrong direction for a country that is in a so called “second Republic” which values openness as opposed to Mugabe’s restrictive & dirigist policies. The PVO Act will definitely restrict CSO/NGO rights to free movement and association as the Mnangagwa government will use it to clamp down on constitutional rights. More worringly, CSOs/NGOs will self censor in the fear of being victimised by the regime. This is very sad because at this present moment in time Zimbabwean CSOs and NGOs must be very active in organising society against rampant corruption, economic decline & poor social service delivery. We are also of the view that CSOs and NGOs will close as most donors will withdraw their funding as a result of this restrictive law. This will affect job security, livelihoods and the country’s forex earnings since most NGOs and CSOs bring in lots of USD into our economy.
With an already restrictive & shrunk civic space, the PVO Act gives impetus to an already poor operating environment for CSOs/NGOs. We in the democratic movement therefore reject this PVO Act in its totality!

His Excellency President @edmnangagwa, working with his Special Investment Adviser, Mr Paul Tungwarara, has put in place three major projects to uplift and improve the livelihoods of War Veterans of the liberation struggle around the country. The three projects are:
1. Presidential War Veterans Fund wich was launched with $150000 for each province with plans to raise it to $1 million per province by June this year. The money is available for funding indivudual and group projects and is interest free.
2. The Presidential War Veterans Rural Housing Scheme which is building houses for War Veterans in rural areas country wide.
3. ⁠The Presidential War Veterans Borehole Scheme which seeks to drill a borehole at every War Veteran homestead.

The President remains committed to improving the welfare of those that sacrificed to liberate the country as a way of thanking them meanwhile doing projects that contribute to national economic development.
