Iโve been reflecting deeply on whatโs happening in Gaza. At first, I believed as I still do, that real change must come from within... So this is a call to action for all people of conscience.
No amount of outside pressure has forced the U.S. or most Western governments to even acknowledge that a genocide is even happening, let alone stop it. But what does work is public pressure where it hurts most... the balance sheet.
When people change what they buy, where they travel, and what they tolerate, companies feel it. And when companies feel it, they exert pressure. That internal pressure is perhaps the only path left to force change.
That is why, beyond the protests and outcries, I believe we must start targeting the economic enablers of this tragedy. In Sri Lanka, that means holding ourselves and our markets accountable.
We import millions in goods from the genocidal state form SodaStream (once based in illegal West Bank settlements), Tea, to chocolate, Synthetic yarn, electronics and fruit juice... over USD 100 million annually.
These are not just products. They are pipelines of profit flowing into a regime that has killed thousands of children, bombed hospitals, and flattened entire neighborhoods.
But it doesnโt stop there.
Israeli-owned cafes, restaurants, and mini-shops operate illegally in Sri Lanka... dodging taxes, flouting regulations, and worse, discriminating against locals. Some even openly refuse service or access to Sri Lankans, replicating apartheid-style segregation. There are even private music festivals hosted by Israelis in Sri Lanka where locals are not allowed. They are bringing apartheid with them to our shores.
Meanwhile, tourism companies continue to partner with Israeli tour operators, bringing steady streams of Israeli travellers and employment agencies still send Sri Lankans to Israel, despite the war and the moral implications of enabling an apartheid economy.
Do we really want that? Do we want Gazaโs apartheid economy transplanted onto our soil?
This is where governments have failed. But we don't have to.
โ Sri Lankan businesses can stop importing Israeli goods.
โ Tourism operators can stop working with Israeli counterparts for now.
โ Employment agencies can pause recruitment.
โ Authorities must enforce tax and visa laws on illegal foreign businesses
โ Consumers can demand alternatives and boycott complicit products
Boycotts helped dismantle apartheid in South Africa. They can work again.
It starts with a simple question:
Are we comfortable with blood on our balance sheets and apartheid in our backyard?
