Leaders make or break society. The tragedy in Africa is the poor leadership prevalent in each country. Corrupt. Incompetent. Ambition-less. Vision-less. Without Conscience.
Unless the worst happen, Gambians are stuck with poor public services.
Here are the reasons why!
The Airport:
They made it mandatory for traveling passengers to pay $20 in addition to the high airport levies but they can’t even provide reliable power backup. Despite the massive mismanagement of those funds reported by the audit office, which the government labeled as a “half-baked” audit report, a statement fueling mismanagement to continue.
They spent over $4m on airport rehabilitation but with poor ventilation. Not long ago, a tourist had to die due to poor ventilation at the airport before the autorities install Air Conditions in the departure hall. When it rains, the water makes its way to the waiting hall and turning the airport to a walking pool.
This is not the first time the airport experiences power blackout, but as usual, the worst has to happen before they do something. That’s how reactive our public administration work. Imagine the pilot unable to establish communication with the tower control center in an emergency? There are situations that are non-negotiable especially if they are repeated acts of negligence.
At some point, an airline had to threaten the GCAA to clear the waste along the runway or else they’ll seize operating in Gambia. For many that study airport operation, waste invites birds and once birds enter the aircraft engine, it’s a recipe for disaster.
The Ferry
A patient in an ambulance had to die in the middle of the sea after the ferry lost control. They knew the ferry was in a bad condition, but who cares! As if this wasn’t enough, the ferry slipped again leaving lives and properties stranded in the middle of the sea for more than 24hrs and left in the mercy of the wind and sea waves. But again, who cares!
NAWEC
At Gambia Participates, we published a study linking how electricity outages by NAWEC could be linked to maternal mortality (especially during C-section) and other deaths during surgery.
I don’t even want to start with our Public Health Centers, Poor Road Networks, etc!
What just happened is a combination of negligence and poor management of NAWEC and GCAA and their line ministries who have been taking these grave issues for granted.
There is no need to have a state-owned enterprise in a country when people have to die due to their poor management and negligence. On the contrary, the basic purpose of any state-run enterprise is to provide services and make life easier for people living in that country, not to kill them or make life miserable.
