Middle East Expert: “Mahmoud Abbas Is Working Behind the Scenes to Influence Israel’s Elections” Yoni Ben Menachem, a Middle East expert and senior researcher at the Jerusalem Center for Security and Foreign Affairs (JCFA), argues that Palestinian Authority Chairman Mahmoud Abbas is actively working to influence Israel’s political system. According to Ben Menachem, Abbas is pressuring the Arab parties to unite into a single list in order to increase their political strength and enable them to become either a blocking bloc or coalition partners in a government that would replace the Netanyahu government. Ben Menachem argues that Hamas also has an interest in a change of government in Israel. According to him, the organization is playing for time and hopes that a different government will retreat from demands for the demilitarization of the Gaza Strip and the disarmament of Hamas. He notes that Qatar and Turkey are also closely monitoring Israel’s political system, warning: “It is important for the Israeli public to recognize that the other side, too, is waiting expectantly for the results.”
