My abuser is my malignant narcissist father who threatened to end my life if I sought police intervention. He is a criminal and is already in the system from a prior DV arrest. No one cared to believe me when I spoke up about his abuse.

Sometimes family can be your downfall. As painful as it is to admit, jealousy within families is real. Not everyone carrying your surname is genuinely happy to see you winning. Sometimes the person smiling with you is the same person secretly praying that you fall.

There are certain things that destroy families:

1. “Umndeni ulwa ngenxa yefa.” 💰 Families can turn against each other because of inheritance. What was supposed to be shared with love becomes a battlefield.

2. Umona. Jealousy can make someone uncomfortable with your happiness. They don't want what you have; they simply don't want you to have it.

3. “Ubambe inhliziyo.” Never underestimate the heart. The heart carries emotions, intentions and resentment. Sometimes the biggest muthi is what a person carries inside their heart towards you.

4. Ukusebenzisa umuthi komunye nomunye. Some families go as far as using traditional or spiritual practices against one another. What should be a place of protection becomes a place of fear.

5. “Kunye nezinto ozithetha ngomlomo wakho.” Never underestimate your mouth. Umlomo uyadala. The words you speak over someone's life can build them or destroy them. Be careful what you wish for people, especially your own blood.

6. Comparing. “Why can't you be like your sister?” “Look at what your brother has.” Constant comparison creates resentment and makes people feel like they are competing for love and approval.

7. Competition. Family is supposed to celebrate your success, not compete with it. But sometimes people want to be ahead of you, even when your success has nothing to do with them.

8. Certain beliefs and mindsets. Sometimes people are raised to believe that another person's success takes something away from them. Instead of saying “May my sibling prosper,” they think “Why them and not me?”

And this is why I always say: blood does not automatically mean good intentions.

Some people know your every move because they grew up with you. They know your weaknesses, your dreams, your relationships, your struggles and the things that hurt you. That knowledge can either be used to protect you or to destroy you.

Sometimes you even dream about a family member and wake up confused because, in real life, they laugh with you, hug you and eat with you… yet deep down, their heart is not wishing you well.

Jealousy is real. Even within families.

But don't become paranoid and start accusing everyone around you. Protect yourself through wisdom, boundaries, prayer and discernment. You don't have to tell everyone everything. You don't have to announce every blessing. You don't have to explain every move.

Protect your peace. Protect your plans. Protect your children. Protect your home. Protect your energy.

And most importantly, don't allow someone's jealousy to turn your heart into the same thing you fear in them.

Because sometimes your greatest enemy is not a stranger.

Sometimes it's the person who knows exactly where you come from. 🕯️

Family is family, but discernment is necessary.
