@Russell99695573 Incidentally, that is exactly the kind of feedback I was hoping to receive from my beta readers. And in your shoes, I'd feel the same way, at least initially. I had to make some changes like that in every manuscript I've written, even if it seemed silly to me at first.
@Russell99695573 Depends on the relative proximity of its uses, whether it is the same character (or narrator) using it, and how it is used each time. Palpable is a word that I could see sticking around in a reader's head, so... maybe replace a few instances with 'substantial' or 'evident.'
@AuthorEmy Surprise your characters. Do something they wouldn't be prepared for and show how they respond. After figuring out what this unexpected event is going to be, choose one character to have known (or planned) all along, then go back and seed subtle hints earlier in the story.
@JohnFly122 Thanks, John! I have always been a huge fan of noir detective stories (old-school stuff like Dashiell Hammett and Raymond Chandler) as well as dark fantasy, gothic horror, and tales of palace intrigue. I wanted to explore a world and its characters to see these themes coalesce.
At long last, the third novel in the Saga of the Freewilds is now available in Audiobook format. I hope you audiobook afficionados will consider giving it a listen (once you're finished with Stormsend and Vagabond, of course!)

@VickyBall3 Two characters are in an elevator as a scene begins. One of them is prepared to commit a violent crime when the doors open. The other, while initially unaware, will ultimately try to stop them. They make the same journey, occupy the same space, but exist in different worlds. 2/2
@VickyBall3 I bear in mind that for every person in existence, there is an entire, unique world that exists solely within their own, often myopic frame of mind. When different characters are in focus I shift the tone to reflect the world they live in. 1/2.
@NikoleCallihan I was naive when I first started.
I had this foolish, romantic notion that if I wrote my heart out, focused on quality and creativity, the right eyes and minds would find me.
The social media popularity contest that this all became in the end soured me on the entire endeavor.
@chrisgbrenning I listen to video game soundtracks. Some of my favorites include the OSTs for Transistor (The Spine and She Shines are great tracks) and VA-11 Hall-A (Doubles for me as great music to enjoy while on a walk trying to gather my thoughts/blank my mind).
@billybinion It was a breathtaking performance, and I always get chills whenever I hear it, but I think it also started a trend of artists trying to recapture that lightning-in-a-bottle moment for themselves, and the results are rarely significant.
Whitney Houston was in a class all her own.
@MadcapCreations A taser/stun gun does not render you unconscious, only to wake up in a dazed and weakened state having no awareness of how much time had passed.
