🚨The Greek alphabet may be older than we think!

Recent findings from Leiden University, led by Associate Professor Willemijn Waal, suggest that the Greek alphabet may have originated earlier than the traditionally accepted 8th century BCE. Through radiocarbon dating of early inscriptions on pottery, the research points to the possible use of the alphabet as early as the 9th or even 10th century BCE.

This challenges the prevailing notion of a prolonged "Dark Age" in Greece devoid of writing and opens up new perspectives on the transmission of early Greek literature, including Homeric epics. Waal proposes that early alphabetic writing may have been practiced on perishable materials such as papyrus or wood, which did not survive in the archaeological record.

Such findings not only call for a reevaluation of the historical development of literacy in ancient Greece but also highlight the role of writing in cultural continuity and memory far earlier than previously assumed.
