Some golfers who allow their pelvis to drift towards the target line on the backswing could benefit from creating a better load into their trail hip.
The wall drill is popular for helping golfers create this feel, but we like one modification.
Starting an inch away from the wall forces golfers to turn more into their trail side since the pelvis is an ellipse and not a circle. This helps them create more “depth” in the backswing.
When you guys reveal these gems of your infinite study and wisdom it is such a gift. Thank You💯‼️ You can't create or do in minds eye what you can't understand intellectually. We all benefit and go further. ☮️🫶
When observing some of the most powerful golfers in the world on 3D, we’ll often see a subtle thorax lift in the backswing.
This not only helps them get their hands higher (more “ramp” time), but allows them to unweight more aggressively when squatting down in transition.
@blackburngolf explains:
More & more research just continues to suggest the larger the range of motion a muscle is challenged, the better.
Flexibility, connective tissue, muscle growth prefer big stretches + contractions.
Of course, this is just a general statement. Numerous quality exceptions apply.
Love to hear elite athletes talking about improving movement capacity AND movement quality.
A 500 horsepower engine isn't as useful without a chassis that can support it.
Tried a 3 day pass at new gym and saw some very scary spinal integrity breakdowns under heavy load. Put on 😎 blinders so I couldn't see what was going on around me.
Movement patterns are often developed around physical limitations.
One of the most common Body-Swing Connections that we see is golfers turning into Reverse Spine Angle to compensate for limited hip and thoracic spine mobility.
It’s what they feel they have to do to get the club to the top, but it’s generally not favorable for long-term back health. The body does what is easiest, not always what is best.
AP Force 📈
A concept we discuss in our advanced Golf and Power courses is how we often need to teach players to push more aggressively with the lead leg earlier in the downswing.
HOW (timing and direction) we teach them to push can be just as important as HOW HARD they are pushing.
One of the key kinetic variables we consider in a force analysis is called anterior-posterior force (or heel-toe force). Think of a golfer pushing frictionally against the ground, towards the target line.
Not only can this be a meaningful contributor to clubhead speed, it can also help a golfer maintain dynamic posture, clear the lead hip and cover the ball at impact.
Here’s an example of a drill we like to help encourage golfers to use their lower body more athletically. @JByrdpga is practicing a pattern that creates AP force with the training aid (called a G Board) and then works apply it to the swing through a feel of using his legs (GRFs) to “drive his arms.”

Medicine balls are some of our favorite tools to help golfers develop athleticism is the gym.
There are a million ways to incorporate them in workouts, but we love to use med balls to teach golfers to use their lower body to drive their arms.
Power from the ground up!
Many amateurs wait until the top of their backswing to begin transitioning to the lead side, but elite ball-strikers generally start shifting to their lead side during their backswing.
Enter the Step Change of Direction.
If a golfer is late, this will feel very foreign to them
Quick 🧵 on Step Change variations:
One of the common observations when analyzing force plate data in our advanced Golf and Power courses is that higher handicap golfers tend to be late to their lead side, both in transition and pushing against the ground on the downswing.
