The mistake people make when discussing tariffs is that they act as if everyone had the same interests, as if tariffs impacted each individual in the same way. But that’s false. Instead of tariffs being good or bad, they should be thought of as redistributing wealth from one group to another. If you work in a factory, tariffs will protect your job, keep your wage higher. If you are the CEO of a multinational corporation, not so much. The thing is that the factory workers who will benefit don’t write op-eds for the major newspapers, so the benefits of tariffs to them always get ignored. Also, the economists analyzing tariff policies are themselves more likely to get hurt by tariffs than benefit from them, which is one reason why they oppose them so fiercely.
