@DavidDidau [Awkwardly backtracking] I agree with most of the piece. Reading needs to be taught carefully as a skill -- the research on that is clear. My hesitation is more philosophical. For me, leading with the core idea that reading should be pleasurable is the path of least regret.
@DavidDidau I think if we want better readers, pupils probably need far more time actually reading whole texts communally for pleasure and far less time constantly stopping to write about them.
@adamboxer1 My thought as a teacher and father: if we are ever in a position where AI is the predominant educational tool, it will be because we have chosen to use it to personalise learning at scale. A worksheet never had joy either. The human part is the part we choose to keep.
Goosebumps! People often ask, is Shakespeare still relevant? Here is a great example, from the Steven Colbert Show, in which Sir Ian McKellen delivers an extraordinary speech. Shakespeare’s words are timeless, urgent and important.

@educationgovuk I know the natural position of every teacher is to be a contrarian, and it's currently fashionable to be anti-AI, but I think this is a great move.
We obsess over how to teach reading and avoid asking why reading might matter
If literature can train attention, judgement and endurance, perhaps we should be more concerned with selecting books, that have the power to enrich, making time to read them, and stop over-explaining.

Tesco just arrived with the Christmas delivery. The driver handed me a bag and said ‘There’s a couple of substitutions, here’s your sprig of rosemary and haddock’
I said to him ‘This isn’t the thyme or the plaice’.
