The CEO of the Second largest corporation on the planet takes the stand.
Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella testified in DOJ v. Google today. This latest "development" shows why the US Government has no case and likewise this case isn't about helping Americans unless they work at Microsoft.
Here are the 8 statements from Nadella (with commentary following)
1. According to Microsoft - 9/10 people use Apple Maps because it’s the default
Anecdotally, I don’t know a single person who uses Apple Maps and the only person who would — people like my dad — uses their car’s inferior GPS. Easy-to-find statistics on this quickly prove that Apple Maps is not used by 9/10 of the public.
2. “We’d run search like a public utility” if the only search engine in town.
No I’m not making this up.
3. To win you need to: A. Money and B. Innovative product
Microsoft is about twice as large as Google so they clearly have the money covered. What they lack is innovation and now they are turning to the government to stop their more innovative competitors. Nadella went on to say that they only make “incremental” improvements to Bing.
4. Defaults are the only things that matter.
Yet in the next sentence Nadella said: Chrome is the dominant browser on Windows despite Microsoft being the default browser.
5. Advertisers pay less for ads on Bing because fewer people use Bing.
The same could be said about cheaper billboards in the desert.
6. Bing is the basis for Yahoo search and this is only possible because of government intervention.
Apparently Yahoo search wanted to use Google but Microsoft was able to use government intrusion to block it and swoop in to become the backend for Yahoo search.
7. Microsoft gives manufacturers money and incentives to make Microsoft products the default.
But, according to the DOJ, when Google, a company about half the size of Microsoft does this it's bad.
8. On AI: content creators must no be allowed to “lockup” an exclusive license for their content.
This is not because Microsoft wants to make sure that creators get paid but because Microsoft wants to have guaranteed rights to access a creators’ content for it AI development.
