🧡Survivors deserve dignity, safety and respect. Protecting the truth about residential schools is part of that responsibility.
Speaking with @APTNNews' Nation to Nation, @NDP MP @LeahGazan says the most extreme forms of residential school denialism should be considered hate crimes, highlighting the mass spread of disinformation.
MSIFN stands with Survivors, their families and communities. We must listen to their experiences, challenge efforts to erase or minimize the harms of residential schools, and demand meaningful action against anti-Indigenous hate.
Reconciliation requires a commitment to truth—and the courage to defend it.

🧡 Survivors deserve to be heard, believed and protected.
Speaking with @APTN’s Nation to Nation, @TorontoMet professor @Pam_Palmater makes the case for treating residential school denialism as a hate crime in certain circumstances.
Denying or minimizing the harms of residential schools attacks the truths of Survivors, their families and communities, and undermines reconciliation. Survivors should never have to defend the truth of what they endured.
The Mississaugas of Scugog Island First Nation stands with Survivors and their families. Canada must take calls for stronger protections against anti-Indigenous hate seriously. Meaningful reconciliation requires accountability, education and action to confront denialism.
Honouring the children who never came home means protecting their stories—and listening to those who survived.

October’s full moon is also known as the Hunter’s Moon because its bright light and unique rising pattern traditionally helped hunters track game and store meat before winter. 🌕
By October, farmers have finished gathering crops, and fields are bare. This makes it much easier to spot animals like deer, fox, and wild turkey that have fattened up over the summer. 🦃🦌🦊

The Ojibwe word for October is Binaakwe-giizis – which translates to the Falling Leaves Moon or Leaf-Falling Moon. 🍂
It describes the natural seasonal shift as the leaves reach their peak colour and begin falling to the ground.
The full moon reaches peak illumination at 12:12 a.m. tomorrow morning. 🌕
This period focuses on seasonal transition, gathering food or preparing roots and squash, and reflecting on letting go of unneeded energy.

Indigenous leadership must help shape Canada’s energy future. ⚛️
A proposed Indigenous-led nuclear project in Belledune, New Brunswick, would use Ontario-made technology and could generate enough electricity for up to 40,000 homes, while creating jobs during development and operation.
As Ontario advances its nuclear ambitions, respect for Indigenous rights, meaningful consultation and protection of lands and waters must remain central. Progress must include lasting benefits for First Nations and responsible stewardship for generations to come.

October 22 marks a special day of remembrance for an Indigenous leader who made long-lasting impacts on communities across the country.
Born on this day in 1844, Métis leader Louis Riel is recognized as Manitoba's honourary first premier.
Ontario’s gambling review must put community well-being first.
Minister @zeeinmilton points to moving players from the grey market into regulated gambling. Ontarians also deserve evidence that the government’s “guardrails” are protecting young people and reducing gambling harm.
MSIFN urges the province to publish the review’s findings, strengthen protections around online gambling advertising and meaningfully consult First Nations. A comprehensive review must address the impacts on our communities and set clear timelines for action.
Protecting youth and ensuring accountability must guide what comes next.

On this day in 1844, Louis Riel was born. He led two resistances against the Government of Canada to defend Metis rights and identity in 1869-70 and 1885. Considered the Father of Manitoba, he was put to death in 1885 for treason.
