My condolences to the families of the fallen victims of outgoing president Hassan Sheikhs violence against lawful protesters today. He can't extend his tenure past May 15, 2026, by the gun and arresting journalists. Somali security forces must protect the people, not hurt them.
Abdikarim Yusuf Adan ‘Dhagobadan’ - Longest serving General in the Somali National Army
Abdikarim Yusuf Adan Dhagobadan was born in Herale, Galgudud Region between the year 1937-1938. Dhagobadan received his middle and high school education in Mogadishu. He joined the country's secret service at a young age, around the end of the 1950s. At this time, Italian colonists controlled the southern region of Somalia. After a short period of time, Dhagabadan was promoted to sergeant by Somalia's first president, President Aden Abdulle Osman. Dhagobadan was promoted to the rank of General by President Mohamed Siad Bare.
Amongst those who fought against Ethiopia in 1977 was General Dhagabadan. Afterwards, the legendary Dhagabadan continued to defend the Somali people. After the collapse of the nation in 1991, country experienced a challenging period in with various factions embroiled in conflict over the establishment of governance, leading to further bloodshed.
The general was a rare exception, avoiding such actions while those in his position became violent criminals. As a wise general, he actively participated in the interim government led by Sheikh Sharif Sheikh Ahmed and defended his people against the enemy, who caused instability. Dhagobadan was appointed commander of the Somali National Forces.
At that time, the army was unpaid, and there was no military force to repel the enemy. The federal government's only success during this difficult period was to control a small part of Mogadishu. Al-Shabaab were stationed less than 1 kilometre away from the presidential palace.
We remember his performance in the Mogadishu in exposing al-Shabaab's operations. In addition, Dhagobadan destroyed Al-Shabab throughout Mogadishu and surrounding regions.
Dhagobadan is known for the peace he brought between the Cabudwaq and Xerale tribes, which have been in conflict for almost eight years. Dhagobadan is remembered as a true patriot who sacrificed his life for his nation and forever in the hearts of the Somali people. May Allah grant him the highest rank of Jannah.
