Weāve made solid progress so far. Wallet authentication is complete, and most of the idle gameplay loop is already in place, including identifying, upgrading, and assigning idle pets to farm resources on various maps.
Our current focus is building out the battle stat and skill systems so pets can actively engage in combat. Once thatās complete, weāll move on to integrating the backend with the client and doing some quick polish before we launch the demo near the end of December, assuming everything stays on track.
At minimum, this version should allow us to begin testing the core battle mechanics.
In the meantime, we hope MSNās upcoming 5th job patch will keep everyone entertained!
Economics
PetStory will maintain its own treasury, which holds all on-chain assets alongside the in-game resources that players can earn and spend throughout gameplay.
5. Internal Transactions
šFusion and Fission (TBD)
This system, once implemented, will serve as a liquidity mechanism for PetStory, allowing it to help regulate NFT and NXPC/Neso supplies dynamically.
4. Treasury Outflow
šOperations and Infrastructure
Funds will cover ongoing operational and infrastructure costs, including development and server maintenance.
šMarketing and Limited-Time Events
Used for promotional activities, seasonal events, and airdrops.
šIn-Game Reward Distribution
Supports weekly or seasonal reward programs, such as in-game PvP, GvG, raid war or big scale wars.
šCommunity Governance
A portion of treasury funds will be allocated based on player governance votes, ensuring community-driven decisions.
šPotential Collaborations
The treasury may also act as collateral or partnership capital in collaborations with other projects or ecosystems.
Navigator
The Navigator serves as PetStoryās built-in discovery and lookup system, allowing players to search for specific NFTs pets or items. It acts as a transparent index for the PetStory ecosystem, helping players explore the diversity of owned assets within PetStory.
Only named pets and identified items in PetStory are visible in the Navigatorās search system.
šPrivacy and Visibility Modes
Players have full control over their NFT's visibility.
1⣠Stealth Mode (Default)
All NFTs start in stealth mode by default. In this mode, NFT remains discoverable on the Navigator so ownership and existence are acknowledged, but its stats and detailed attributes remain hidden. This ensures players can maintain privacy while still verifying authenticity.
2⣠Public Mode
When toggled to public mode, the NFT stats become visible and searchable by other players through filtered searches. For example, when searching for pets or items with specific setups, fostering transparency, community engagement, and potential trading or collaboration opportunities.
šUse Case
The Navigator is designed to balance discoverability and player privacy.
It allows the community to appreciate the diversity of PetStoryās NFTs, from godly items to highly specialised pets, while giving each player complete control over how much information they share.
This system supports both competitive and social gameplay:
- Competitive players can keep their specialised or countermeta pets private.
- Creative players can showcase their unique builds.
- Players can use item filter function to search for items with specific stats and skills.
By integrating on-chain transparency with optional discretion, the Navigator reinforces PetStoryās commitment to ownership legitimacy and privacy.

āļøThis roadmap is subject to change based on shifting priorities.
When we decided to develop PetStory in a more unconventional direction, we knew weād face obstacles not just in marketing, but also internally. For instance, choosing to expand utility for existing NFTs rather than launching our own meant walking away from a major potential revenue stream. Naturally, that sparked a lot of debate within the team, and to be honest, some members chose to move on because of that decision.
That said, weāre not removing financial rewards altogether, weāre simply delivering them in a more controlled and sustainable environment that doesnāt compromise the integrity of the gameplay or the overall economy. At the same time, by adding real utility to underused NFTs, we hope to make them more tradable in the MSU marketplace and create an additional source of potential income for players beyond the rewards we distribute.
As for the narrative around Web3 players, I agree that many are still primarily motivated by rewards. But I also believe that @MaplestoryU is helping shift that mindset by bringing genuine gamers into the space and gradually converting existing Web3 users into more gameplay-first participants. We want to be part of that movement, and hopefully PetStory can follow in those footsteps.
Key Design Principles #5: Fun
Last but not least, fun.
A game must be fun. Itās the foundation of everything we build, and it will always take precedence over financial returns or real-asset value.
At PetStory, we believe that if a game focuses solely on generating quick profits or ācash-outā opportunities for players seeking fast monetary gain, it inevitably collapses into a Ponzi-like cycle, one where early participants benefit briefly before long-term stability crumbles. That is not the future we want for PetStory.
2. Final Words
If you earn and have fun, thatās great. Youāve found both joy and reward.
If you donāt earn but still have fun, thatās still success because entertainment itself has value.
But if youāre not having fun, regardless of the rewards, then weāve failed our mission.
PetStoryās ultimate goal is to nurture a sustainable, player-first experience, one that prioritizes enjoyment, community, and creativity over speculation.
Because in the end, if a game isnāt fun, nothing else matters.
1. Building for Joy, Not Just Profit
In the broader Web3 space, itās common for players to engage primarily for profit and thereās nothing inherently wrong with that. However, we believe that @MaplestoryU has already attracted a large community of genuine players who play for enjoyment, nostalgia, and creativity.
PetStory seeks to build upon that foundation, creating a game thatās genuinely enjoyable, emotionally engaging, and built to last.
We can't give an exact date but we plan to release a demo / 1st version when the idle aspect of the game is ready. But game progress will most likely be wiped as certain game security features will require contracts to be deployable on Henesys chain, which the MSU team is working on now.
Key Design Principles #4: Interoperability Between PetStory and MapleStory N
PetStory and MapleStory N currently operate as independent experiences within @MaplestoryU. While they share NFT ownership and asset identity, their gameplay systems, stats, and mechanics remain separate.
We remain open to deeper integration in the future.
Should Nexon and the MSU framework evolve to support two way cross-game data sharing, PetStory will be ready to embrace it.
Until then, PetStory will continue to enhance the overall MapleStory Universe by offering meaningful utility and engagement for NFT holders, without disturbing MapleStory Nās core gameplay.
We understand that some players have expressed curiosity over whether pet skills or attributes from MapleStory N will carry over into PetStory. As of now, the answer shall remain no.
It means that the pets or item stats in PetStory does not carry over or provide stat boosts to your character or items in MapleStory N and vice versa.
And to answer your question, no you would not need to play MSN first in order to play PetStory, but you would need to own NFTs from MSN to utilise in PetStory as our current plan does not involve launching our own NFTs.
Web Application
Weāve chosen to launch PetStory as a web application rather than native iOS or Android apps.
While mobile platforms offer better UI/UX, they also impose limitations that restrict Web3 integration and development freedom.
For example, current app store policies prohibit linking to external marketplaces, which prevents us from fully participating in the MSU Marketplace Affiliate Program. In addition, platform fees and approval cycles can slow down innovation and reduce treasury efficiency.
By choosing a web-based approach, PetStory can:
- Deploy updates faster without waiting for store approvals
- Maintain direct connectivity to Web3 services and MSU partners
- Ensure full accessibility across devices with minimal resource constraints
Key Design Principles #3: Platform Choice
To promote accessibility, PetStory is designed to be playable anywhere and anytime, whether during short breaks, commutes, or moments of downtime from @MaplestoryU.
This vision requires:
- Mobile-friendly gameplay with idle mechanics.
- Short, session-based design (around 5ā10 minutes per play).
- A balanced experience between passive and active play, too idle feels unrewarding, while too active contradicts our goal of convenience.
Since PetStory is idle, in-game rewards or microtransactions will primarily be expressed through time-based advantages, such as time skips, temporary boosts, material gains or access to exclusive PvP brackets.
Players who invest more (whether through time, strategy, or monetary) will naturally gain a progression edge, but not dominance.
Key Design Principles #2: Fairness and Anti-Bot Design
Fairness is essential, especially in a blockchain ecosystem, where real money and digital assets are at stake.
It is no secret that MapleStory has long fought an ongoing war against bots, which exploit unfair advantages by operating hundreds or even thousands of accounts simultaneously. This undermines the hard work of legitimate players, especially in MapleStory, where active gameplay has a significant impact on account progression.
Across various MapleStory titles, including @MaplestoryU, GMS, KMS, and MSEA, teams have consistently worked to combat botting as new automation methods emerge. However, the issue remains deeply rooted in the gameās 20-year-old design. Fundamentally solving it would require aggressive measures that could disrupt core gameplay and alienate players, altering the nostalgic experience that draws them to the game in the first place.
Thatās why PetStory is built from the ground up to minimize multi-accounting and botting advantages while ensuring that genuine player progression remains rewarding and meaningful.
2. Competitive Fairness
To uphold fair play across all systems:
- All attempt limits, event rewards, and shop caps will scale per pet rather than per wallet, ensuring fair play and mitigating multi-account abuse.
- NFTs are eventually required to be staked with a lock period to be utilised in game.
- Our primary gameplay loop revolves around idle resource generation and strategic optimization of NFT pets and equipment for PvE and PvP, inherently limiting the benefits of botting.
- All critical game data will be stored and validated on our servers.
