@MDAH_Official Might you consider simplifying the magnolia a bit? I based the magnolia design on one of the commission-made flags that made it into the top 9.
I think a simpler design is better when it comes to flags, and it also solves the "21-star circle" issue.
@catherineholman@MDAH_Official Oh, nice! Just change the white stripes to gold and you have an improved version of the current flag proposal.
That being said, I think the petals should be a bit thicker, to make them look more natural.
@MSyallpolitics @MDAH_Official I made a design that got into the top 150.
I wonder if the magnolia flag would look better with a simplified magnolia? I took the magnolia from a design (not mine) that got into the top 9, and put it onto this flag.
Also gets rid of the 21-star circle problem
#newflagms#takeitdown#msflag These are the six designs I submitted to the flag commission! Support the #MSUnityFlag and check out the other designs at https://t.co/I5Vb3Cpjm1. The submissions are towards the bottom of the list. Support them on the website by giving them a heart
For those curious, I've created a new version of this flag that follows the guidelines set forth by the commission. I've made a new post on my profile explaining the new symbolism. Take a look and tell me what you think!
#TakeItDownMS#takedowntheflag Take a look at my proposal for a new flag of Mississippi. I would love to hear support and feedback! Let me know which design is your favourite, or if you would support a change to one of these flags.
@lilbabybratface Hmm, I definitely didn't make one with the river at an angle, but I did make one with a straight (as opposed to wavy) river. That version is on my previous post. Maybe that's what you're thinking of?
@lilbabybratface I've heard a couple of people say that, certainly not many though. I think if you put a white flower on a red background it will be compared to Hong Kong no matter what. That being said it's nowhere near similar enough for the two to be confused, in my opinion.
The Mississippi Unity flag represents the greatest parts of Mississippi, from its natural beauty to its culture and heritage. Take a look to see what the #MSUnityFlag is all about! Show your friends, and retweet to show support! #TakeItDown#NewFlagMS#MississippiFlag#MSFlag
@TonyDziepak As far as the actual shape of the Magnolia, I found it important to balance actual botanical shape with simplicity. I designed the flower to be based on the same symmetrical, repeating shape, to keep it simple. Many say a flag succeeds if a child can draw it from memory.
@TonyDziepak We always have to remember that flags are meant to be viewed from far away, flapping in the wind. If one can't see elements of the flag from that far away, then its symbolism is lost.
@TonyDziepak This is an interesting idea, I must say. My issue is, however, that it would be very difficult to see those stars, even up close. Flags are best when they're symbolic, but that symbolism is lost when the flag becomes too complex.
@TonyDziepak That being said, I've tweaked the number and meaning of the stars in the new version of my flag, simplifying the design. The stars also have new symbolism based solely on Mississippi, and not on other states.
@TonyDziepak The wreath is actually not taken from the Stennis flag. You are correct that the Stennis flag has 19 stars surrounding a single, large star. There are actually 20 stars in the wreath surrounding the magnolia in my flag.
@TonyDziepak I did not know about this controversy, but I agree in a general sense that the river needs work. I've been working on a new design that reduces the number of waves, which makes the design a bit more pleasing and, I think, would take away any association with the serpentine walls.
@TonyDziepak The Blue-white-red colors are actually based on the current flag, just flipped on its side, and the red field is an enlargement of the red square. This way it kind of takes inspiration from the current flag in a way that doesn't include overtly Confederate symbolism.
@TonyDziepak I've heard this suggested a few times. Personally, I like the blue and white to representing the river, and although having a primarily blue flag also looks nice, I think it makes more symbolic sense to me to make the flag primarily red.
@vcme99 That's an interesting suggestion. I'm working on a new design which includes the motto as required by the flag commission. That version will include a smaller magnolia AND some stars with important symbolism, I hope you'll like it!

Here are some images of my designs for the flag of Mississippi, rendered as if they were waving.
I used https://t.co/ZHmR6aAVtg to make it happen.
@LOLCLT @AP Thanks for posting this! I'm the creator of the flag, and I've just finished designing a new version that follows the guidelines of the flag commission (putting "In God we Trust" on the flag). I'm working on a new graphic, and it'll be up within the next few days!
