Those attacking Rarara are missing the point. What Davido did at the World Cup stage was completely wrong. Rarara simply spoke his mind and defended the dignity of the nation. Rather than being insulted or attacked, he deserves credit for standing up for what many Nigerians believe. Speaking the truth should never be treated as a crime.

A true patriot promotes the image of his country before the world while working to solve its challenges through the proper channels. That is why many people believe Davido was wrong and that Rarara’s response was justified.

Dangote refinery just reduced fuel gantry price by N75. From N1,250 to N1,175. And people are dancing.

Let me remind you what is actually happening here.

That same refinery changed its petrol price 15 times between March and May alone. 9 times in March. 6 increases and 3 decreases. So a N75 drop is not generosity. It is a correction inside a cycle of volatility they themselves created.

The gantry price is not what you pay at the pump. By the time it travels from Dangote’s loading bay through marketers, distributors, transporters and filling station owners, petrol in Lagos was still selling at N1,255 per litre even after a previous Dangote price cut. The gap does not close itself because it has widen.

Now Nigeria sits on crude oil. Dangote refinery accounted for 79% of petrol consumed in Nigeria in April. We are not a country without refining capacity anymore. So why is the benchmark still international crude pricing? Why are Nigerians, who own the crude in the ground, buying the finished product at import-equivalent rates?

A N75 reduction on a product that costs over N1,000 per litre is not a relief.
