Tiny Dancer is a song by Elton John from the album Madman Across the Water released in 1971 with music by Elton and lyrics by Bernie Taupin.

The main inspiration came from Bernie Taupin’s first trip to the United States in 1970, particularly to California. He wanted to capture the free-spirited nature of the women he met there: “blue jean baby, LA lady, seamstress for the band.” Although many believe it is directly about Maxine Feibelman (his girlfriend at the time and later first wife, who was a dancer and sewed clothes for the band), Bernie has clarified that it is more of a general portrait of the California girls of that era, though Maxine clearly influenced it. They even included “With love to Maxine” in the album credits.

The song features beautiful piano and runs over 6 minutes, so it wasn’t a huge initial hit: it only reached #41 on the Billboard Hot 100 in the U.S. and wasn’t even released as a single in the UK. Over time, it became an absolute classic, especially after appearing in the movie Almost Famous (2000), where it’s sung on the bus.

It is one of Elton John’s most beloved songs.
