Hathairat Phaholtap, managing editor of The Isaan Record, who did not advance to the second round of the national senate election, said she was offered around 100,000 baht to join a group of senatorial candidates led by a former MP and vote for designated candidates selected by the group.
She said the group told her that they needed a representative from the journalism profession. Apart from receiving money for joining, additional money was also promised for each vote, at a rate of 50,000 baht per vote.
"So if they were given a list of 10 people to vote for and they voted accordingly, they would get 500,000 baht," she added.
Hathairat expects that around 100 senators out of the new set of 200 senators will come from the civil sector, while the rest will belong to six major political factions, including influential political families (Baan Yai) and political parties.
Hathairat said she is currently gathering more evidence before submitting it to the Election Commission. However, the negotiation for her to join the group was conducted verbally and was not recorded, she added.
