On this day in 1928, during Game 2 of the Stanley Cup Final against the Montreal Maroons, 44-year-old New York Rangers coach Lester Patrick replaced injured goalie Lorne Chabot in net. He stopped 18 of 19 shots in a Rangers victory.
The Rangers won the Stanley Cup in five games.
The Montreal Maroons only existed for 14 seasons but in that time they helped reshape the NHL, won two Stanley Cups and had 11 players and five coaches enshrined in the Hockey Hall of Fame.

Fun fact: in 1938, when the Montreal Maroons were looking at folding, they proposed to the league that they merge with the Canadiens to form a single team, the Canaroons.
The Canadiens laughed them off, the Maroons folded, and the Canadiens still took the Maroons’ best players.
On this day in 1899, Nels Stewart was born in Montreal.
Known as Old Poison for spitting tobacco juice in goalie's eyes, he won two Harts and a Stanley Cup in his Hall of Fame career.

Clint Benedict's nose was broken by a Howie Morenz slapshot. When he returned weeks later, he was wearing a mask. He was the first NHL goalie to wear a mask, although he was not the first hockey goalie to do so.
