The Panama Canal officially opened to world trade on August 15, 1914, but its first transit was far more modest than the international celebration originally envisioned.
With World War I disrupting plans for a large inauguration, the SS Ancon crossed from the Atlantic to the Pacific with about 200 people aboard, including Panama’s President Belisario Porras.
That voyage marked the beginning of regular operations on an approximately 80-kilometer waterway that would transform maritime connectivity between the two oceans.

One of the most impressive parts of our original lock system is something you cannot see. We do not need pumps to move the water that raises and lowers vessels through the original locks. Water flows from Gatun Lake into the lock chambers by gravity through an enormous system of culverts beneath and alongside the chambers. More than a century after the Canal opened, the basic principle remains beautifully simple: water, elevation and gravity move ships between two oceans.

Look at the Security Council. There are three European members in the Security Council.

Whether you like it or not, Russia is a European country, and Europe [has] three in five. I mean, Europe is not three-fifths of the world.

There are no African permanent members. There are no Latin American permanent members. There is one Asian permanent member.

But, on the other hand, it is clear that the reality on the ground, in the end, will have to prevail.

Wednesday through at least Saturday, heat indices will surpass 100 degrees, potentially reaching 109 on Friday.

These are extremely dangerous conditions, and New Yorkers must plan now to stay safe and help their neighbors do the same.
