“The ego gets drunk in the world of sports. Your ability to stay sober—that’s your competitive edge.”

The only failure would have been the “not going”. The not showing up. Playing it small because of the fear of people’s opinions. Giving into the cheap seat feedback of those that have never once dared greatly with their lives.
Congrats on one heck of a season @MizzouSoftball!
What beliefs are we driving as coaches when our worth is tied to our productivity?
1) People are here for me to help me be more productive.
2) If they are not a "gym rat," they must be lazy.
3) Accomplishment is more important than values/priorities.
4) Play is a waste of time.
Leaders and coaches,
Taking time to invest in your own mental health and mental performance is the least selfish thing you could do.
If you don't, your teams and staffs will spend all their time trying to manage you, take care of you, and be there for you.
That's selfish.
Having a healthy relationship with the thing you do can actually make you better at the thing you do.
1) Parents prioritizing values over goals
2) The trap of "I'll be happy when..."
3) Sport as a vehicle, not the destination.
I think this can also be true for coach-athlete relationships. Sturdy coaches set boundaries around non-negotiables and also prioritize humaning over performing.
When it's tempting to entertain the cheap seat feedback from social media, chat boards, and/or random petty comments, remember it's probably coming from folks who have never once dared greatly with their lives. If they had, they would know better.

Who are you when the ball is not in your hands, when you are sidelined/benched, when your colleague is getting the recognition, and when you are not in the spotlight?
WHO ARE YOU when it's NOT about YOU?
The pathway to greater self-esteem is increasing your teammate value.
Goodness, I miss these kids. And they were just kids in their 75-90 year old bodies. To observe their presence in the moment was to know a life well lived. Perhaps these pictures of our grandparents serve as a powerful reminder and in the memories the answer to our calling.
Sport psychology goes well beyond the science of teaching traditional mental skills.
The art in coaching gives performers a taste of what they are ultimately longing for (purpose, connection, belonging etc.) in a culture that wants them to be agents of the grind and hustle.
