I just saw the much talked about film “Project Hail Mary.” It's very entertaining and uplifting and features a fine performance from Ryan Gosling. But what most intrigued me were the powerful Christian themes at play in it. The title, of course, refers to the Hail Mary pass in football, since the adventure undertaken is a fairly desperate attempt to save the planet. But it also becomes eminently clear that the reference is not just to football but to the Blessed Mother herself, for the Gosling character is undoubtedly a Christ-figure. I don't want to give away too much of the plot, but it involves a willingness to sacrifice one's life utterly in order to deliver the entire human race from disaster. It is, of course, no accident that Gosling's character is called Ryland Grace, for throughout the movie, his presence and actions constitute undeserved favor to others. A particularly intriguing character in the film is a sober German scientist who relentlessly presses Grace to make the supreme sacrifice, even when he is unwilling. She represented for me the great moral demand that presses upon us throughout our lives, continually summoning us to self-gift. A last observation: Jesus had a second in command whom he called Peter (the Rock); Ryland Grace has a very unusual sidekick whom he calls “Rocky.” I'll leave it at that.

I know lots of people say that Christianity is in irreversible decline and that we are inhabiting, at least in the West, a post-Christian society. I'm not so sure. Like it or not, we remain a Christ-haunted culture—and a film like “Project Hail Mary” makes this clear.

Did you know this fun fact about your favorite pumpkin spice treat?

Saint Hildegard of Bingen is one of only four female Doctors of the Catholic Church. She is known for her gifts in art, medicine, music, herbology, cooking, and writing.

Among the broad legacy she left behind was her interesting introduction of the pumpkin spice flavor we know and love.

Spice that Brings Joy

Before it became the overwhelmingly popular ingredient of all things Fall, a Catholic nun was sharing the healing properties of the combination of cinnamon, clove, and nutmeg. Today, we refer to this delectable combination as pumpkin spice!

Of course, she didn’t refer to this spice combination as “Pumpkin Spice” herself, per se. Instead, Saint Hildegard indicated that this blend of spices brings joy.

Personally, I receive a lot of joy from this seasonal spice! She was right!

In Saint Hildegard Von Bingen’s classic work on health and healing (titled Physica), she talks about the ability of cinnamon to brighten a bad mood, and praises the ingredients of nutmeg and cloves for their warmth.

“Take some nutmeg and an equal weight of cinnamon and a bit of cloves, and pulverize them. Then make small cakes with this and fine whole wheat flour, and water. Eat them often. It will calm all bitterness of the heart and mind, open your heart and impaired senses, and make your mind cheerful. It purifies your senses and diminishes all harmful humors in you. It gives good liquid to your blood, and makes you strong.“ - From Physica, St Hildegard von Bingen, (1151-1158)

The actual combination of spices began to be sold as a mix for those making homemade pumpkin-flavored treats. Instead of buying all the spices separately, they were given the convenience of buying one.

So, while Saint Hildegard isn’t officially recognized as the muse behind the Starbucks pumpkin spice latte, we can now see her influence in this fall favorite!

As an added bonus, her feast day is a sort of Fall opener on September 17.

Father, Source of Life, you have bestowed on St. Hildegard of Bingen many excellent graces. Help us to follow her example of meditating on your ineffable Majesty and to follow you so that we, amidst the darkness of this world, recognise the Light of your clarity to cling to you without fail. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, God, forever and ever. Amen.

The entire world had begun to understand the implications of LLMs and Palantir realized they had been working on the foundational software, the ontology, for 20 years.

The ontology was necessary to make sense of LLMs, so they immediately decided that AIP would be the future of the company.

A tech company lives or dies based on their ability to recogonize the future far before it becomes reality -- as a result, they can build the products and craft the narrative that is needed to succeed in a competitive technology environment.

The latest craze has been "vibe-coding," essentially an easier way for engineers to use AI to help them code.

Is the trend validated?

Well...

- Cursor, a vibe-coding startup, was the fastest company in the history of startups to reach $100M ARR and now has a $10B valuation.

- $MSFT CEO said 2 days ago that 30% of the company's code is now written by AI.

Palantir saw what was happening...and they did what they did best.

Took their foundational software and constructed it in a way to now incorporate the concept of "vibe-coding" via the ontology in AIP.
