Support for Proportional Representation is growing across UK political parties
We were delighted to hear @lewis_herbert from @CambridgeLabour, Naomi Bennett from @CambridgeGreens, & James Catmur from Huntingdonshire @LibDems speak at our #MakeNoiseForPR event in Cambridge today.
The Commons is now in recess for a few days.
Of the 37 divisions held so far in this session, 8 would have changed result if seats matched votes - that is, the opposition represented more people ~22% of the time, but the government won anyway.

"Many Americans are angry at the electoral system."
"The question is: Are people angry enough to pass reforms—like proportional representation—that can make some big changes to finally fix it?
Our democracy may come to depend on the answer."
Lack of political trust threatening the functioning of our democracy.
The @LabourParty knows it.
The country wants to see an end to our broken #FPTP electoral system.

Gwynedd consultation backs STV with nearly three quarters in favour
🥳Good to see such a decisive rejection of the broken FPTP system!🥳

"Britain’s first-past-the-post system becomes a random number generator. Set-up designed to lock in representative, stable government increasingly guarantees the reverse"

More than a thousand people have ALREADY added their name to say that 2024 should go down in history as the LAST election under the broken and unfair First Past the Post system.
Will you join them?

Yesterday I wrote a piece about Elon Musk for @ObserverUK, a free speech warrior so committed to the cause he serially sues his critics for libel. Today he responds to an untrue tweet about my own libel case.

“The whip hand”?
These guys are just weird. That does however help explain how the Brexiteer dinosaur arrogance helped screw this country so royally with Brexit. That, and the EU negotiators just being technically superb at what they do.
We don't live under a two party system... but our voting system does!
In 2024 the smaller parties received 42.6% of the vote, a big increase on the 24.3% achieved by parties other than Labour/Conservatives in 2019.
Over 21 million votes didn't make a difference at the General Election.
We don't think that's fair... and that's why we've projected it on Nelson's Column - sending the message to the new government that we need #ProportionalRepresentation.
6 in 10 voters did not get an MP they voted for at this election - a record high.
A further 1 in 10 votes just bloated the majority of candidates who'd already won.
This is how a government can hold 2/3 of the seats on 1/3 of the vote.
Something has to change.
Many are celebrating the results of yesterday's #GeneralElections2024 , and we can be proud of the open and fair way it was conducted.
But the yawning gap between vote share and seats won highlights how FPTP distorts the results.
The UK needs #ProportionalRepresentation
Amusing to see Rishi Sunak bleating about the threat of a Labour "supermajority", when they've spent decades defending the #FPTP voting system that has regular supermajorities as a feature.
Time for #ProportionalRepresentation!

#GeneralElection2024
-@campbellclaret is right #ProportionalRepresentation should be on the agenda after what is likely to be one of the most disproportionate elections ever.
Millions of voters, that have had their votes unrepresented, have been calling for PR for years.

I’m sorry, WHAAATT?!
How dare this man tell us what subjects he thinks are valuable. Thing One: the creative industries are HUGE in the UK. Thing Two: we are HUMANS; not drones; not cogs in your machine.
@andreajenkyns So you don't like the FPTP voting system that delivers "supermajorities" on less than 50% of the vote?
Hope you'll now be backing the campaign for a fair voting system with 🗳Proportional Representation.

If you are worried about a party winning an un-earned supermajority, the solution is to join the campaign for proportional representation https://t.co/LTX85MzKAj

Here's @BristolMVM in front of the iconic Clifton Suspension Bridge sharing why they are part of the movement for equal votes!
We've just launched our new petition, telling @RishiSunak and @Keir_Starmer that Proportional Representation MUST be a priority for the next Government.
