Equity and pot odds don't work the way you think they do.

Someone raises, you 3bet, they 4bet really small. You call your AJo - your'e getting amazing pot odds, how bad can it be? AJo certainly has enough equity.

The thing is in poker, equity isn't created equal.
We all know pocket aces win more than their fair share. This has to come at someone's expense - and usually it's the hands that make a lot of bluffcatchers.

When you're playing with the nuts, you can do no wrong, and your hand overperforms.

When you're playing with a bluffcatcher, you can do no right.

Even if your hand has 50% equity, you'll be lucky to win one third of the pot. Every action your opponent takes forces you into a tough decision.

Back to AJo facing that 4bet. If you call and flop an ace - you have a bluffcatcher.
If you call and flop a jack, you have a bluffcatcher.
There are very few good outcomes for you.

Just fold it. (and call 56s!)

if someone checks back 8 high on the river after you called flop and turn, he just told you EVERYTHING.

he's underbluffing rivers. which means when he bets, his range is way too strong.

but most players still won't fold.

they'll think "maybe he'll bluff next time" and keep calling with second pair until they've seen him check back air 10 more times.

that's the leak. waiting for a preponderance of evidence.

if someone's giving up with 8 high, is it more likely they're underbluffing or bluffing at the appropriate frequency?

you know the answer. fold every bluff catcher. every single one is losing money.

the edge isn't knowing underbluffers exist. it's exploiting them immediately when you spot one.
