Stafford Hospital Auxiliary Funds Lifesaving NICU Patient Safety Equipment
The Stafford Hospital Auxiliary has raised the funds to purchase a blood bank tube sealer for the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) lab via its recent silent auction.
Strong support from hospital staff, volunteers, local businesses, and community members made it possible. The auction not only covered the equipment cost but also generated extra proceeds for the Junior Volunteer Scholarship program.
The new tube sealer shifts the NICU from an open system (using clamps) to a closed system for preparing neonatal blood units. This upgrade boosts safety and quality for transfusions to our region's tiniest patients by:
Maintaining sterility
Reducing waste and preserving blood for future use
Limiting donor exposures per neonate
Allowing refrigeration of unused portions with full shelf life
Enabling safe cross-matching without breaking sterility
“We are deeply grateful for the generosity and dedication shown by our Auxiliary and our community,” said Cody Blankenship, VP and Stafford Hospital Administrator. “This support helps us enhance transfusion safety for our tiniest patients and strengthen the care we provide in our NICU.”
The Stafford Hospital Auxiliary plays a key role in supporting Mary Washington Healthcare's mission through fundraising, volunteering, and community programs.
