My classes focus a lot of novels, and that’s great, I love many of them, but I forgot how much I loved short stories. There are so many interesting things you can do with a text that only takes a couple days to read. I need to teach them more.
@DrBradJohnson It’s so true, back when I was a student and had to do observations, I could tell the attitude of the school just from talking to the main office secretary. It’s amazing how everyone feeds off and emulates each other, for good or for bad.
@FixingEducation It think it also hurts that admin don’t need to have any teaching experience (at least in NY). It’s hard to know what teachers need or to empathize when you’ve never done it.
When I was in school, I had a little notebook where I wrote down my homework (copied from a chalk or white board), which I then did between classes or at home. I miss when it was that simple.
@JamesAFurey My first school required 16 grades a quarter…not only did it take away from class time, but it completely undermined the value of pen and paper assessment in the first place.
@heymrsbond My school used to do paid “dress down” days for teachers on Fridays….literally were expected to pay to wear jeans at the end of a hard week.
I always see a lot of back and forth debate on technology in the classroom. Personally I think it fine as long as 1) it has as a specific purpose 2) You actively monitor it and 3) You’re willing to take it away from kids if it’s not working.
@clubsoda67@gerrystanekGSO@ModestTeacher When I was in a similar situation I used it have my classes do everything in google docs and slides, then I could have all their documents open and see who is working and who hasn’t don’t anything in 5 minutes. It’s not as efficient, but it worked.
@KaeleyT A parent told me that she planned everything for her autistic son (with a very low iq) as if she was already dead. That way she can help him during difficult transitions while still alive. She approached everything as if he was going to lose her tomorrow, and it really helped.
@FixingEducation I went to an all boy high school with a strong football culture. The day after the superball was a joke. They even gave us the day off one or two years (if I remembered correctly)
@tgrierhisd I worked with an ELA teacher who refused to teach certain really important parts of the curriculum and her excuse when she was called out about it was that she “did not teach to a test”. The person who called her out said she should teach it because it’s on the regents….
The only way to get better at reading, writing, and editing, is to read, write, and edit. Start anywhere, read comics, write in a journal, edit some fan fiction. Find joy in any of these 3 things and do them as often as you can. I guarantee you will see academic growth. #ELA
@ZachWLambert My school just got some bullet room windows for certain rooms. On one hand, I’m grateful for their efforts to be safe, but it’s also just really sad and is heartening that we need it in the first place.
@MrDanielBuck I think people also have misconceptions about what “command of a classroom” looks. I feel like people often think it has a negative, authoritarian connotation, which isn’t the case. You don’t have to be cruel, cold, or “controlling” to be in control.
@P_A_Kirschner@tombennett71 I know teachers who, since Covid, have gotten in the habit of recording thier lessons for Google classroom. Which inadvertently allows for this. I haven’t heard of any of them use it in meeting or with parent yet, but who knows. I don’t think that’s really for me though.
I have a student on the Spectrum who struggles with organization and to stay on task. I used many tips and tricks, then I finally made him “start of class” checklist and a self monitoring form. It has made a world of difference and has led to significantly more independence.
@AmmarMerhbi I don’t have the source, so I can’t cite this, but I once read that homework only positively impacts students who already have 80% understanding of the topic (otherwise it can lead to frustration or possibly reinforcing wrong ideas). In my experice I’ve found that to be true.
@technologylaura Once I stopped doing this regularly, it completely changed my relationship with teaching. I’ll work during the weekend maybe 2/3 times a year, mostly to organize my calendar and unit plans. It’s helped a lot with burnout and how I feel about my profession
If your child/student struggles with executive functioning and staying on top of thier work, try getting them a wall calendar (just a regular paper one) and model how they can use it to set goals for work completion and keep track of due dates. #specialed#teaching#education
