A 25-year-old woman was abducted at gunpoint and forced into the back seat of a car.

Desperate for someone to notice, she locked eyes with two teenage boys in another vehicle and silently mouthed two words… “Help me.”

17-year-old Jamal Harris and 19-year-old Aaron Arias immediately called 911 and began following the car.

The driver realized they were behind him and started speeding up, slowing down and swerving through traffic trying to lose them. But Jamal and Aaron stayed with him, continuously updating police on where the car was going.

They knew if they lost sight of it, the woman could disappear.

Police eventually caught up, surrounded the vehicle and arrested the driver. The woman was finally safe, and later embraced the teenagers who had noticed her silent plea and refused to look away.

Jamal and Aaron were just out driving that day. But because they paid attention and kept following when it would have been easier to turn away, a kidnapped woman made it home safely.

Argentina participó del proyecto internacional SPRINT (Sustainable Plant Protection Transition), financiado por la Unión Europea, junto con centros científicos de distintos países. Nuestro país fue el único sitio de estudio del continente americano y estuvo representado por un equipo del INTA encabezado en Argentina por la investigadora Virginia Aparicio, científica del INTA Balcarce y del CONICET.

Los resultados encendieron una alarma que no podemos ignorar. El glifosato fue detectado en el 100% de las muestras fecales humanas analizadas en el sitio argentino, frente al 71% en los sitios europeos. Además, las concentraciones medianas encontradas fueron considerablemente mayores en Argentina. El estudio también detectó exposición en animales y concentraciones elevadas de glifosato y AMPA en muestras de murciélagos, mostrando que esta presencia alcanza distintos niveles de los ecosistemas.

Esto se suma a investigaciones anteriores de Aparicio sobre contaminación por plaguicidas en Argentina. Un trabajo publicado en 2024 advirtió que el monitoreo de plaguicidas de uso actual en el agua potable no recibe actualizaciones regulares, y planteó la necesidad de fortalecer los sistemas de vigilancia y protección del agua.

Pero hoy Virginia Aparicio enfrenta un sumario administrativo en el INTA. Medios y organizaciones que acompañan a la investigadora sostienen que el procedimiento podría terminar en su exoneración y lo vinculan con su trabajo sobre plaguicidas. Incluso fue presentado en la Cámara de Diputados un proyecto de resolución que habla expresamente de un “proceso de sumario e intento de exoneración”. Hasta ahora, las razones y responsabilidades detrás del conflicto siguen siendo objeto de disputa pública.

La ciencia tiene que poder investigar incluso aquello que incomoda. Cuando aparecen contaminantes en el suelo, el agua, los animales y nuestros propios cuerpos, la respuesta no debería ser silenciar las preguntas, sino investigar más, controlar mejor y proteger la salud y el ambiente.

Defender la ciencia independiente también es defender nuestro derecho a saber qué estamos respirando, bebiendo y llevando dentro del cuerpO
