A baseball dad asked me this during Baseball Office Hours last Saturday:

“My son makes great contact at the plate…

but struggles to elevate the baseball and hit line drives.”

Here’s what I told him:

One thing Barry Bonds taught me:

If a hitter constantly pounds ground balls…

a lot of times the TOP hand isn’t working correctly through the baseball.

The top hand (the hand closest to the barrel) helps:

- control the barrel
- direct the swing path
- and stay through the baseball

So here’s something he can do TODAY at the cage:

Take one-handed TOP hand swings and focus on driving hard line drives back up the middle.

If the top hand rolls over too early…
the barrel usually cuts across the baseball and creates weak ground balls.

But when the top hand stays THROUGH the baseball longer…
hitters usually start creating better backspin and line drives naturally.

The best way I explain it to my hitters is give yourself a "pat on the back over your front shoulder"

One important thing:

Do NOT overdo this drill.

Only take about:

- 5
- 8
- maybe 10 swings

You’re training a FEEL…
not trying to exhaust the arm.

One more thing:

Don’t think:
“hit the ball up.”

Think:
“drive the ball THROUGH the center fielder.”

That external focus changes the swing intent completely.

Try it at practice today and let me know how it goes after the next game.

Gavin Newsom just announced a shiny new taxpayer funded program giving free diapers to newborns leaving California hospitals and his administration is partnering with Baby2Baby with almost $20 MILLION in state funds to manufacture them.

I’m sure it’s a total coincidence that one of Baby2Baby’s Co-CEOs, Norah Weinstein, sits on the board of Gavin Newsom’s wife’s California Partners Project.

There is nothing that Gavin Newsom can’t grift.
