Football league chairmen gathered on the 6th June 1980 to vote. The outcome was Rochdale 26 Altrincham 25. Rochdale remained in the football league by 1 vote. If there was a tie a re-vote would have occurred between the two tied teams. In 2 previous instances the league club won.
